Can someone compare vintages 2001 vs 2002 in Australia in everyday language?

You would have to be a lot more specific. Australia is a really big country.

The answer would depend upon which part of Australia first...as the climate varies greatly. Then you should indicate which varietals you are looking at.

If, however, you simply want to know if 2001 or 2002 is better for Yellowtail Shiraz (for example) the answer - as far as I am concerned - would be 2001. Big commercial vintners, wherever they may be, tend to yield better wine when they are a bit more discriminating about the fruit they buy. This is easier when you produce less of it.

According to vintages.com, 2001 and 2002 were both good years (each scored a 9). Furthermore, "Vintage charts are always approximations. First, the regions invite the broadest of generalizations. Second, the best wine growers can often deliver little gems when the majority are reduced to lumps of coal."
