"Why don't you have a seat over there" What cultural reference is there and what does it mean (subtext)?

No this is not homework. :)

Dateline NBC segment "To Catch a Predator" with Chris Hansen.

It basically involves luring crazy old perverts to little girls houses with the intent of catching them on camera and embarassing them on national TV. When the guys come into the house Chris Hansen says "Why don't you have a seat over there." while the camera focuses on this poor pervert whos life is now ruined.

The sentence is used in two contexts.

    1. If spoken by a receptionist or personal assistant it normally means that you are standing and it will be a few minutes so take a seat to be comfortable and I won't forget that you are there.

    2. If spoken by a person in authority, a cop, a teacher or principal, or a person charged with keeping you out when you are leaning over them at a desk, it is a false politeness that is hard to argue with, but it has the subtext of "and if you don't go sit down, I will put you there."

It is simply an offer to you to take a seat as indicated. It does not seem to have any cultural connexions to it. It goes to show politeness and civility.
