What are some of your favorite artists that wear their influences on their sleeve?

This question came to mind last night as I was listening to the newest Supagroup album. Lead vocalist Benji Lee channels the spirit of Bon Scott on every song, vocally and lyrically. All three of their albums could have come from a modern day Scott fronted AC/DC.

Another obvious example is Oasis... you don't have to listen for more than a few seconds to realize that The Beatles are stamped all over them.

Update:

Jake - That's cool, but "Hot for Teacher" was by Van Halen... your education continues young padawan.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are basically the modern-day Byrds, right down to their Rickenbacker guitars. Petty has always idolized Roger McGuinn.

    There are a couple.

Elliott Smith with the Beatles. Aside from the Beatles and John Lennon covers he was known to play there was very clear influence on him. (on a side note, I'm reading a book about him and there was a funny conversation he had with a friend about how bad he felt for John Lennon that Paul wrote Helter Skelter. "It was like Paul out-Lennon'd Lennon" He could just see Paul walking into the studio saying "hey John, check out this song I just wrote 15 minutes ago. I just tracked it in the other room with Ringo. So what have you been up to? Oh, cutting and pasting Revolution #9, that's cool.")

Pavement and the Fall. When Pavement was making Slanted and Enchanted they were about two tracks short of the amount of the time that they were hoping to acheive so Steve's plan was to just rewrite two the Fall songs to complete the record (I read or watched something where they actually gave the track names but I can't remember off the top of my head). Mark E. Smith (the singer/songwriter of the Fall) hates Pavement, saying that they just did what the Fall did and somehow got a ton more notariaty for it.

Not necessarily one of my favorite bands, but a band I like a lot and definitely my favorite story in this vain is Elastica. They were sued by Wire, who were their absolute heroes, TWICE.

Also, I can hear it, but not quite a on the sleeve sort of a thing, but one of my favortie quotes about this topic was when Thom Yorke said that Radiohead stopped making guitar rock records after OK Computer because they ran out of ways to rip off the Pixies.

  • It's Friday, George!!

Although many artists are influenced by the Beatles, I think that Enuff Z'nuff is another band to add to the list. You can hear the comparison when listening to one of their songs. They harmonize much the same and even sing with the Beatle flair, just not as good of course. It is truly unmistakable that Enuff Z'nuff creates their music with the Beatles' work in mind. And if their music similarities aren't enough, they have also been quoted ranking the Beatles as their major influence.

    Definitely Lenny Kravitz.

Every time I listen to Lenny Kravitz, I hear The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and others that now escape me. I'd have to put on some of his tunes to make the list longer, but you get the idea.

Jeff Buckley.....a Van Morrison meets Led Zeppelin mash up

Jet....The Beatles, especially if you listen to one of their slower songs like Hold On

Helmet.....I hear a lot of Sonic Youth throughout their music

Angus young from ac/dc. when he does "the duck walk" he is basically sayin "hey chuck berry was a great influence" or at least that's how i c it.

Eddie van halen is another. when he does a solo...which is very often...it most always has a bluesy undertone. he attributes this to his favorite of all time...Eric Clapton

Nirvana=direct descendent of the Pixies. The whole slow, quiet verse then fast, loud chorus in "Teen Spirit" and many of their other songs came from the Pixies.

Escape the Fate has a music video that pretty much resembles AC/DC's "Hot For Teacher"

Edit: Haha, my bad. I just woke up. Everyone can slap me now.
