Check out the "Personalized art" page at this website: http://www.mysweetandsour.com/ At the bottom of the first personalized art page they have three sample signs: two "Pirate" and one "Rock Star." All three use black and two use red and black. They might give you ideas--and you might want a personalized sign to go with the decor. I love the idea. You can make it work!

Hey there, fellow punk rock mom (my son's middle name is Strummer, so go figure)...

Just remember, babies' eyes can distinguish bold, bright colors better than pastels, so a black/white/red room might be a little over-stimulating for him/her (and the last thing you're gonna want during the night is an overstimulated baby). Maybe stick with a more muted wall color, and just accentuate here and there. Cute pirates are nice, not scary ones (and you'll be surprised at what your kid finds scary that you wouldn't think is scary). Dog fighters? What does that mean? Like Michael Vick? Ha ha.

We did our baby's room with John Lennon animal prints (got everything online...you can google it to see what I mean). He did a whole series of art for his son when he was a baby.

Now our baby is almost 5 years old and he's got a race car bed and race car room.

This isn't exactly a decor question, but you will want to check out the "Rockabye Baby" series of lullabies. They are CDs that contain lullaby renditions of greatest hits from different artists--The Ramones, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, The Pixies, The Cure, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, and more.

A must have for any rocking mom and baby!

As far as decor, black is fine, but make sure you add some white in there for contrast--it will actually help stimulate the baby's brain and eye development.

I love this question. I too am a "punk mom" and dont dig all the "cute bunnies themes" I did however take a life span class and we were taught although babies take a while seeing color, red, blue and other bright colors are best. Black, white dont really make alot of difference. Also, colors stimulate babies moods, do we want a baby inside a barcode room? Good Luck....

I recently helped a friend decorate her nursery, she wanted something different, mostly to annoy the MIL :D

We painted the cot, change table, drawers etc black, left the walls white.

She went for a sort of circus, clown theme, but it was really edgey, using black/white & red.

The "clowns" looked more like dolls on puppet strings, white faces, red lips, limp poses, alot were holding red balloons & she had them as a border all around the room.

She had a massive graffiti art painting of her sons name, also in black, white & red (it was brilliant & without a doubt the stand out feature)

The bedding, curtains etc were red, with black & white diagonal stripes just around edges/borders.

She had a big black mat on the floor with a massive red star in the centre & there were a few stars, big ones, spread around the walls, also in b,r & w.

We did pretty much everything ourselves, except the mat (which was a lucky find) & a friend did the name painting.

We even made a manequin/doll mobile for over the cot, we found real cutesy clown toys that were made out of wood & repainted them & redressed them.

2 "girls" we did in fishnet stockings etc (used punky looking barbie/bratz doll clothes)

& the two "boys" we gave mowhawks, dog collars & used punky boy bratz clothes.

They all had the white faces. It looks brilliant!!!

In fact the whole room looks brilliant, you walk in & it's just like, WOW!!

It's very babyish & not distasteful at all, but it's really edgy.

Good luck with it, it's gr8 fun!!!

    <Edit>

We also found these while looking for idea's, love the punk cows & you could so easily change the color scheme

I think black and white is a perfect. I think I would stay away from anything violent.... I think it's great to express your style in a healthy way and black and white is stimulating for a baby. Maybe go with something contemporary, black and white with some red. Shapes would be cool. Good Luck!

We did stars, not just little starry night stars, but large ones splashed all over the room in red black and white.
