Electric baseboard clicking: solutions and costs?
We have electric baseboard heat (220 v., fin-type, not fluid filled), and the unit in the bedroom clicks a lot whenever it goes on, which, being the bedroom, is very annoying. It's about 8 ft. long.
1. Is there a way to fix it without replacing the unit?
2. If not, would a fluid-filled baseboard fix things?
3. If (2), then what might I expect to pay for purchase and professional installation in the NE Ohio area?
And are programmable thermostats available for these units, and at what cost?

you may be able to get the clicking to stop by removing front panel to gain access to visually see the heating element. What ever points the elements or fins rest on is where the noise is coming from. When the element heats up its also expanding and at the points where it is supported from is where it moves. Maybe a little aluminum foil folded up under points of support will allow it to move freely.
If you have a thermostat on the wall now that operates this there are programmable thermostats for this. they can be ordered through your heating repairman or i have also seen them at your building supply stores

The clicking is heat expansion "creap".
If it bothers you might remove the unit cover and
lube the brackets holding the copper element with paraffin wax or high temp. grease.
The next question will be: How long does it take for the smell of paraffin to dissipate from the lubrication of my electric heater?

electric baseboard heaters are pretty basic, if there is a clicking my first impression would be to see if thermostat was coming on and off. if thermostat on the unit itself they are not that costly and worth a check. check it with a multimeter or amp probe to see if that is the problem.

How about letting your wife run that fancy white noise maker her sister in-law gave her for Christmas three years ago. It will cover the clicking noise and aid your darling's sleep!
