You either get paid double time, or get a day off in lieu when you work a bank holiday.

Only bank workers themselves are entitled to bank holidays. For all other workers there is no automatic right to take bank or public holidays as paid or unpaid leave. Any right to do so depends on the terms of your contract. There may be express terms giving you a right to time off on some or all bank and public holidays, or there may be terms implied by custom and practice. Another point worth noting is that although the Working Time Regulations give you a statutory right to 20 days holiday a year, unless agreed otherwise, paid time off on a bank or public holiday will count towards the 20 days, so you may find that up to eight eight days’ leave is swallowed up by bank or public holidays

The Americans answering here are thinking you work in a bank just because you used the term Bank Holiday! Yanks, it's got nothing to do with working in a bank!!!

As others have said, it rather depends on the terms in your contract of employment. If you work less than 30 hours a week the hours that you work on the bank holiday would be part of your contractual hours; if you work over and above what you have worked you should be entitled to extra pay or time off in lieu.

Best thing would be to check with your HR department.

Depends what's in your contract. And what job you do. If contracts says bank holidays have to be worked but can have day off or payment instead then you have a choice. If you have the (legal) statiotery requirement which is:

20 days holiday (full time) and 8 days bank holidays.

If you work in the emergency services and are on a 'shift' or rota systmem then you do not get bank holidays off automatically if if falls within your 'shift' for that week. But you would get paid an extra 8 days per year because if your shift pattern happened to fall on a bank holiday, then you are entitled to that as your shift pattern day off - regadless of it being a bank holiday. You need to check your contract

It depends on the terms of your contract - you aren't necessarily entitled to anything (it could just have been classed as overtime). Some companies will give you time in lieu for it, others will give you anything up to tripple time plus.

I would confirm this with your employer before working the days!

    --- EDIT ---

I don't know why people are marking me down, this is the law! Look at these sites:

    http://www.accountancyage.com/best-practice/featur...

    http://www.lawontheweb.co.uk/basics/employment.htm

They spell it out pretty clearly - "there is no legal right for employees to be given Bank and Public Holidays" - there is a minimum number of holidays you have to have a year, but this is separate. It is entirely up to the employer how they manage bank holidays, and this will be in your contract.

No, if you work on that day, you just get paid as you normally would. Of course, this depends on bank policy, but I don't think you are entitled to another free day off.

Being as most employees (apart form lazy git civil servants) have to take bank holidays out of their normal leave allowance I would have thought the answer is no unless you take a day leave.

Depends who you work for. I worked for a bar/restaurant once and if they're independant employers they don't pay any extra OR time off in lieu.I checked on it!

  • You may be paid more (time and a 1/2) for those holidays that you worked. To be sure, go to your HR dept. and ask. :)

You either get double pay for working that day or another day of in lieu instead
