Has ignorance of a particular colloquialism ever gotten you in trouble?

I've always referred to a Coke, Pepsi, etc. as a "pop" and I've heard others refer to them "soft drinks." Until I moved to Tennessee, I didn't realize there were other terms and my ignorance almost earned me a beating.

I was working at an assisted living facility for the mentally ill and one of the residents asked me for a "cold drink." I took him literally. I offered him punch, ice water, juice, and iced tea. He became very aggitated and aggressive and I couldn't figure out why. Those are all cold drinks, right?

It wasn't until he started banging his fist on the Coke machine that I figured out what he was talking about. So I said, "OH! You want a pop!" He said, "NO, I don't want a pop, whatever the hell that is! I want a COLD DRINK!"

Have you ever had a similar experience?

Update:

Locals also use the word "Coke" to describe anything from Coke, to Diet Cherry Pepsi, to Rootbeer. My husband asked me for a Coke and was upset when I wouldn't give him one. (He's diabetic.)

He explained to me that when someone asks for a Coke, you're supposed to bring them the drink you know they favor--in his case, Diet Mountain Dew. If you don't know what drink they favor, you're supposed to ask what KIND of Coke they want. This makes no sense to me. LOL

In parts of New England, what I know as a "milkshake" (ice cream and milk mixed into a thick drink) is known as a frappe. When I went into a fast food type place and asked for a milkshake, the clerk looked puzzled and asked me, "so you want us to put milk in the cup and shake it?" I thought it was hilarious.

Not that Violent. In a part of Texas I lived in they called all soft drinks 'Coke' Literally.

If you went through a drive through and ordered a cheeseburger and a coke the they would ask what size you wanted and what kind.
