Apart from the obvious places like Independence Hall, where are good places to visit?
If you had good friends or family visiting Philadelphia where would you take them or suggest they visit. Non-tourist places please.

I'd first take them on one of the trolley rides, which gives a good overview of what the city has to offer. Then I'd take them to where they wanted to go based on the tour. There's a tourist center across the street from the Constitution Center, another place I'd take them, that has all kinds of information and someone there to help get to what your friends or family is interested in seeing.

I guess it depends on what you consider touristy, and what you like to do. Here are some things that come to mind.
1. Mutter Museum - Lots of medical oddities like a 5 ft colon, preserved fetuses, tallest skeleton in North America, and a liver from conjoined twins. I've been there before, it's very interesting.
2. Chinatown - go early (before 2) for dim sum. I think they serve it every day, but I know for certain they do on the weekends. If you've never done it before, carts carrying small steamers of 3-4 dumpling sized items are pushed around the dining room. The servers typically speak poor english, so just point at things that look interesting and give it a try. You also get a bottomless pot of tea and although you'll think you've spent a lot, it's almost impossible to spend more than $10 a person. Ocean Harbor on Race St. between 9th and 10th is a good place to try.
3. Society Hill - Nice area with well kept 18th-19th century rowhomes and interesting residential towers by I.M. Pei. It's a residential neighborhood, no museums.
4. Elfreth's Alley - Maybe touristy, but it's the oldest residential street in the country that's still in use.
5. University of Pennsylvania - very attractive campus in University city, maybe check out the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology that's there.
Hope you find it useful and something piques your interest.

It depends on what types of activities you are interested in; Philly and the surrounding region has a diverse population and entertainment venues. Below are some of the places (other than the obvious) I like in the town and surrounding region.
1. The Rodin Museum
2. Longwood Gardens
3. Lancaster County (Farmer's markets, countryside, and antiques)
4. The Brandywine River Museum - Collections of the Wyeth family art and the original Treasure Island Illustrations
5. Reading Terminal Market - Great place for lunch
6. South Street
7. Any sporting event in the arenas - Word of warning, don't root for the visiting team in Philly :)
8. If you like history, then go see Valley Forge or the Brandywine Battlefield

Well, if you're a movie buff.....Community College of Philadelphia (served as the police station for Trading Places), Rocky's apartment/pet store/boxing club all located in the Kensington section, the insane asylum in 12 monkeys (also in Kensington), Holmesburg Prison which was used in both movies: Up Close & Personal (with Robert Redford) and Animal Factory (Edward Furlong and Williem DaFoe).
