Science vs Religion. Read please.?
I have selected four core questions which are important to humans, yet remain unanswered (and unanswerable). For the sake of being brief, I have made some great generalisations and what I refer to as “science” here, I should probably refer to as “logic”, but that would sound offensive.
HOW DID WE (HUMANS) GET HERE?
Science: We evolved over millions of years. Because of natural selection, we (and other animals) suit our surroundings almost perfectly. This theory has been formulated from observation of skeletal structure etc. Using Occam’s razor (The most logical explanation is almost always the correct one), this is most likely correct.
Christianity: “God” made us from nothing, through magic. This was written in a book by people who, by today’s standards, were extremely uneducated. Because of enculturation, this is believed by a great many people.
WHERE DID THE EARTH COME FROM?
Science: The Big Bang Theory. All matter in the universe was contained in a singularity. This exploded outwards, and is still expanding. As the gas from the explosion cooled, the particles began to come together, forming stars and eventually planets. This theory has been formulated because of evidence, such as the fact that all matter in the universe is moving apart at a very fast rate, and cosmic microwave radiation. It is not proven, but is currently the most logical explanation to date.
Christianity: “God” made the universe out of nothing. It only took him seven days. Again, this theory is only respected because of the number of people who believe in it.
WHAT HAPPENS TO US AFTER WE DIE?
Science: This is still disputed, however the most logical explanation is that, assuming that consciousness is something generated by signals in the brain, the brain shuts down, therefore we no longer have any consciousness. This means we can no longer think, and it is generally accepted that when a person has no consciousness, they cease to exist.
Christianity: Our consciousness somehow survives, even though there is no physical energy source. This consciousness (or “soul”) goes to a magic place, which doesn’t physically exist, where it lives on forever. This could only rationally be explained by a dying hallucination, which seems to last forever, however, if this was true, then it would not actually exist, and would therefore be false. Again, this theory is a lot more comforting, and is often the only reason people become Christians, as a form of “insurance”.
HOW SHOULD WE LIVE?
Science: This is a personal decision, and factors should be taken in, such as how your life will affect others. It is generally accepted that, for an ideal society, people should do what is best for the genral wellbeing of the human race. This means taking into consideration others’ wellbeing as well as their own. This idea of ethics should be constantly being re-evaluated as times change.
Christianity: This depends on how much people decide to adhere to the bible’s teachings. If all teachings of the bible are taken as fact, then people should be executed for cursing the name of god, and no one should be allowed to do any work on Sunday. Homosexual people and women should be discriminated against. If the entire bible is not taken into consideration, then people should respect others, not be adulterous etc. Core values such as these have been recognised for millennia, long before the bible was written, and are present in most other religious texts.
In conclusion, Christian belief was formulated by people who thought in a completely different context to the people of today. These people knew practically nothing compared to what we know today about nature. What is now regarded as “superstition” in ancient times (such as the belief that a dung beetle was rolling the sun across the sky and the belief in ghosts) is in fact no different to the Christian belief, and were it not for the emperor Constantine, it would not have to following it does today.
Scientific theory, while not proven, is the most LOGICAL explanation available. It is not an attempt to disprove religion, but rather explain the world without the restraints of ancient and outdated hypotheses.
The point I am trying to get across is that religion is unnecessary. You don’t need it to live a fulfilled and worthwhile life, in fact, without religion, there is so much more freedom to express yourself, and contribute to society. I don’t see religion as a threat, and I am not trying (nor is there any need) to disprove it. It is simply an idea which would have seemed quite logical at the time it was created. I also don’t put ALL my faith in science. Most of it is probably wrong, but it is the best explanation we have.
All these religious people have missed the point. This is not an attempt to put forward by theory of evolution, and disprove your theory of religion, but the COMPARE them and show which one is more logical.
Also, I stands by what I said about Occam's razor. Creationism may be more simple (convenient, isn't it?), but that doesn't make it more LOGICAL.
My entire premise here relies on logic. I am not saying that evolution is perfetc fact, but it is by far the msot logical.
"KiraJenLove", evolution is a process that takes millions of years. Because of enculturation, the only explanation you will accept is some simple, story book explanation that says that everything was done in a few days. This is simply narrow mindedness.
I challenge anyone to provide a more RATIONAL explanation.
Also, please stop referencing the bible. It is just a book, and it is outdated.

Logically speaking.....you will understand what your purpose is in life one day in the future when God reveals Himself to you...... As Einstein put it: "My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God" (The Quotable Einstein, p. 161).
As Einstein put it: "Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe—a spirit vastly superior to that of man" (The Quotable Einstein, p. 152).
Many intelligent and learned people believe—and have a religionlike faith—that the complex laws governing the universe came into existence purely by accident or chance. But is this view credible? We know for certain it is not supported with demonstrable evidence. So here is the real question: Does it make sense to believe that a universe governed by a precise system of well-ordered laws came into existence by itself?
Here is where mankind again needs to pay much closer attention to what the Scriptures tell us. They present an altogether different viewpoint. ". . . For He commanded and [the heavens] were created. He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree [a law or ordinance] which shall not pass away" (Psalm 148:4-6).
The Scriptures explain that God created laws in the "heavens" that cannot be suspended. "Yes, by my hand was the earth placed on its base, and by my right hand the heavens were stretched out; at my word they take up their places" (Isaiah 48:13, Bible in Basic English).
Some great truths are expressed in these verses. When compared to all other alternatives, this point of view makes sense. It is the only point of view that reconciles all difficulties.

I'm afraid your assessment of the beliefs of science vs. religion are extremely faulty.
For one thing, evolution is NOT part of science. It is a secular religion and is actually disproved by REAL science (chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, etc.). I would suggest that Occam's Razor actually supports creation, not evoluton.
As far as evolution being "logical", let's take a look at the logic. You would believe that this computer in front of you is intelligently designed (even if you had never met its creator), but you believe that the human body, which is millions of times more complex than this computer, just happened to come about by random chance or by trial-and-error? That isn't even logical, and I thought atheists worshipped at the altar of logic. If by trial-and-error, where are all the "errors"?
What DO we know about the descent of animals? We know that, just like the Bible says, animals ONLY bring forth after their own "kind". That is ALL that is EVER observed. Variation within a "kind" is NOT evolution. Evolution is "change between kinds", which is physically impossible. For example, the "dog" kind can produce the dog, the wolf, coyote, etc. but they are all still DOGS. They will never be a whale, or a cat, or a mushroom. There is a "black box" around each of these "kinds" outside of which change is impossible. This is a law of nature. Change within kinds (loss of information) does NOT prove change between kinds (gain of information). Even with mutations, no new information is ever added, it's just repetition or omission of old information. A five-legged cow is still a cow; a two-headed turtle is still a turtle. It can never develop into a new "kind", therefore evolution is impossible.
Secondly, God did not use "magic" to create the universe. He is God; He is outside of and not controlled by His creation. He can do whatever He wants. Did you ever stop to think that maybe God is the "reality" and we are not, because everything we know will not last, but God will?
Also, the Big Bang Theory has never been proven. In fact, ,many scientists today are abandoning it, due to inherent problems with it. There are many scientific ways to disprove it.
I believe what the Bible says about what happens when we die (not "popular Christianity) - that we enter a state of unconsciousness during which we have no awareness or knowledge of the passing of time, and we remain in that state until Christ returns to resurrect His followers. We do not float around as "ghosts".
We are to live our lives in accordance with our Creator's wishes; He created us for fellowship with Him. He loved us enough to die for us, to take the punishment for our sins. He was treated as we deserve so that we may be treated as He deserves.
It seems to me that you are simply spouting the humanist rhetoric that you've been spoon-fed throughout school. It's unfortunate, and I don't really blame you, I blame your teachers and the school system that failed you, turning you into a "good little soldier" for the New World Order. Your uninformed assessment of world history is extremely flawed and bigoted. Please come down off your high horse, and ask your Creator to forgive your pride and sins, cleanse your heart and make you a new person in Christ.

Very long but very well though out and very interesting.
First science now says that the brain (like a computer) is now not considered the source of thought but a processor of an energy source being sent to it. It merely takes this energy and channels it where it best fits, but is now not believed to be the author of this energy, Just thought you might like to know that.
Second thought I agree with religion is a bad thing in society for it tries to control the very thought process of people evolving. And all things MUST change in order to survive. This is fact! I though unlike you believe that God in fact is probably the greatest of all scientists . I believe that the process was and is originating from Him and to be a creator He HAS TO BE OF A GREAT SCIENTIFIC MIND. It is impossible to create all that we know of without great knowledge of science. So I do not see a contradiction between God and evolution. Science is the religion of God and can be no other way. Man invented religion to control unruly people and just never gave up the reins when it accomplished what it was set up to be.
That's the way I see it anyway.

Why dont you evolution guys give it up? Its a stupid theory. Even if there was no alternative theory or creator. Even if the theory of evolution was all there was its still going to sound silly.
People who believe in the Theory of evolution are just like Jehovah's witnesses. Push push push!
I mean if it was near correct we will have just a few species. Its logical. How can a dog open a can of dog food?
Darwin says evolution was by geological conditions etc but we have just one planet, many people on all parts and dogs in all parts too. Different colours and sizes are the only real differences. Boy!

I do not have the time to go into this right now. Time and space in Gods domain are not as we experience it. I do not know but hypothetically, a wink and blink with Gods eye, is like thousands of years...
There is life after death. See John 3:16 for an example.
Talk to a good medium too and if you are lucky and in need, you will be connected with those who have passed...
It is not about freedom of oneself to express as oneself...and you have missed the point and are thinking worldly...not spiritually.
God is energy, so much so it is incomprehensible. And everything in the Universe is energy, everything.
Just because man has been given free will to choose, does not mean all that man does is right & just...
We as humans must feel secure in knowing. If it does not have a name we give it one...It is our own method of creating order and control to feel secure and at peace. Yet if we can not see and or identify something, then we deny its existence?
You can not see gravity but you know how it basically works?
How about Centrifugal force or Magnetic forces which travel around our planet let alone universe...Can't see them either but they are there.
How many times in a day does a person call something "Mine"? They label things theirs as if they own it yet they do not...Do you have a girlfriend? Is she yours? How about a pet, a car, a home...Not...They are not yours...They exist.
What is yours is yourself, your emotions, your senses be they 5 or six... the gifts of life....and your connection with God...for he who believes in me, shall live forever ;-)

There are going to be a lot of over educated scientist that find out that some uneducated ancient herdsman were a lot smarter than them. It is easy to tell that you are not a believer because to believers God is as real an anyone else they know. Its not a matter of needing religion, its a matter of having a relationship with the one who created the universe.

Evolution makes sense but natural selection as the mechanism for it is flawed as its chief agent is blind
chance.
As for consciousness, I think its pretty clear that it is
not some by-product of the brain but something more
profound. Although, there the brain is important as it
is the seat of the nervous system.

You're confusing science with philosophy or secular humanism on the last one. Science does not tell us how we should live, because that is an opinion or a philosophical issue, not a scientific issue or an objective statement.

YOu making quick generalizations about christianity
There are some that feel totally opposite and see both sides( in most situations) as equal truths, and they give us explainations.
Some even go as far to combine the two therories to actually make sense religiously as well as scientifically, like the people on this website...

I would give you a great answer if you made your question short enough to read without setting aside an evening to do it.
