My wedding planner has arranged for my family to do a food tasting for the event catering? Would this be free?
I'm just not sure if I'll have to pay for it and I certainly don't want any more added expenses to the already big number I am looking at, especially if we end up going through a lot of these events before we finally like the food and end up choosing the vendor. I am embarrassed to ask the planner - I don't want her to think I'm being really cheap...

Usually the tasting is inclusive, but by all means ask the planner. She's your employee, and her role here is not just to help you plan, it's to help save you money. If you're afraid of seeming 'cheap' to her, you could end up paying for a whole mess of things you don't want or need, so get that out of your head. Good luck!

Most reception halls offer a complimentary food tasting (in reality, it's built into the cost of your reception).
If you don't want to sound cheap, call your planner and ask if the facility will accept credit cards for the tasting, like you're planning on paying for it. She will then either say yes, they do, or no, you don't need to bring anything with you, it's free. If she does say to bring a credit card, and you still want to know how much it will be, say "and if I prefer to pay in cash, how much should I bring."
Or you could anonymously call your caterer and ask if they include a complimentary tasting, if so, for how many people, and if not, how much is it

Wedding Planner's Professional Advice to your ??'s:
My tastings are ALWAYS complimentary for my clients. If your planner was not able to negotiate a comp tasting with your caterer, you should ask her to do so. Industry standard. Don't be afraid or embarassed to ask, you only lose money by not knowing and being assertive/honest about your needs.

Tastings should be included in your catering contract. You'll have to check it to see if there is a limit on how many can come before you start paying.
I would think that if there was a charge the planner would have informed you first....otherwise you have a really shitty planner.

Don't be embarrassed. Just ask. It should be free but you never know. She won't think you are being cheap. You need to ask lots of questions and have everything written out for you. It's not being cheap - it is being smart.

Don't be embarrassed to ask her sweetie. That's why you hired her. Planners know a lot of people don't know all those details.
