White blisters at the back of throat, hurts to swallow, hurts to eat...?
I've had a cold for a few days. A couple days ago my throat started hurting. Yesterday it hurt REALLY bad, so I grabbed a flashlight and there's white blisters at the back of my throat (I have no tonsils). It hurts to swallow, hurts to eat, hurts to talk. I went to the doctor yesterday and she did a swab for strep but I haven't heard anything back yet. She didn't think it was strep, just vital. What can I do to help it? I've been swishing with salt water, and it helps for about 10 minutes, but then it hurts again.

The culture for strp throat will take a few days to grow & they will call you with results as well as the Dr will know whether or not to perscribe you anything. For right now, you are best swishing with the warm salt water BUT you can also find comfort in Chloraseptic Spray, lozenges & honey cough drops...Take a tablespoon of honey several times throughout the day...will work wonders on that sore throat NATURALLY!
Keep plenty of fluids going, ice chips are soothing...so are icees or ice stuff with fruit in freezer isles at grocer...yummy ones! Sipping on warm tea is also very soothing & good for you! Hope you feel better soon! Take care~

If the surgery involved general anesthesia, then you were endotracheally intubated and placed on a ventilator for the duration of the procedure. They do this because they introduce paralytic drugs to prevent body movement when operating, but the drugs also paralyze respiratory function. An ET tube is a curved, semi-rigid poly-something tube that is inserted down your trachea just above the Carina (the spot where your trachea splits into the left and right major bronchi tubes). From your immediate throat (oropharynx) all the way down to there, it is very sensitive mucous membrane. To top it all off, at the very end of the tube, there is a little balloon that they inflate to seal it in place at the Carina, making sure it cant dislodge and that you get ample oxygen. Any way you slice it, this whole procedure is a bit traumatic and the after effects can be quite uncomfortable. Also, it is statistically impossible (even using surgical Aseptic Technique) to ensure that absolutely no bacteria was introduced. Once I had the procedure performed and I would up with bronchitis for 2 weeks because of it. Bottom line, if it is seriously impeding your ability to talk, eat, drink, swallow, breathe, or is just seriously concerning you.... go to a doctor. These things can happen.

got the same thing here! I usually take a couple ibeprophen in the morning, and then drink some alkaseltzer. the kind that has "sore throats and body aches" on the box. I find that whenever my throat hurts like this, so do the muscles all around my throat. The back of my neck is the worst! But alka seltzer is awesome, and ibeprophen works some wonders on the pain.

It does sound like strep, but if your doctor says it's not then you probably won't be getting any antibiotics. The only sore throat virus that usually gets treated by prescription antibiotics is strep. You can really only keep using Robitussion, drinking Gatorade (I find it feels really smooth on sore throats), vitamin c, and stick with soft foods. By soft foods I mean yogurt, ice cream and soup. Definetly keep swishing and gargling with the salt water. You might try using Chloraseptic spray on your sore throat, it has a numbing agent in it that temporarily takes away the pain so you can eat. And sleep as much as you can to give your body time to rest and fight this thing off.

Sure sounds like strep to me, except strep usually hits without the cold symptoms. I had it a couple of years ago and I will never forget. Felt like I had surgery or something. Lots of cool, clear fluids helped the soreness I had, sipped ice water constantly until the antibiotics kicked in. Tried the cloroseptic but it didn't last very long like the salt water. I would call the doctors office and tell them I can't stand this pain, what should I do? Test results should be back soon, good luck!

Not that I'm knowledgeable on the matter, but to me it does sound like an infection, and I don't think it would hurt to go in and have it checked out. If it really is an infection you'll want to get rid of it before it does any serious damage, especially since you're recovering from surgery.

Might be mono, you should have it looked at again if it gets worse. For the pain, I recommend Chloraseptic spray. It will numb your throat for a while.
