    iam2 - The Fourteenth Amendment does not need much interpretation regarding citizenship. The words are almost entirely self-explanatory.

    "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

    How else would you interpret that? You sound like people who believe the Second Amendment only protects the right of militias to bear arms. The reason the Fourteenth Amendment applies to anyone BORN here and ignores parentage is because we had a whole country of non-citizens (former slaves).

    1st section: Defines citizenship and specifically answered the question raised in Dred v Scott that claimed slaves, even though born in the US, were not citizens. It also specifically restates the Due Process Clause of the 5th amendment and established that there are NOT two classes of citizens by establishing the Equal Protection Clause.

    2nd section: Repudiated the 3/5ths compromise. When the House in being reapportioned, each individual is to be counted as a whole person.

    3rd section: Imposes a sanction, since removed, on public service by former confederate officials.

    4th section: Repudiates any responsibility for confederate war debt.

    It created 2 classes of citizens and all but cancelled the 10th amendment---as SCOTUS uses the 14th far afield from its original intent--which was to free the slaves.....which could have been done with a simpler amendment. Also it was never legally ratified under the existing laws at the time.

    The 14 amendment was designed to grant citizenship to and protect the civil liberties of recently freed slaves. It did this by prohibiting states from denying or abridging the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States, depriving any person of his life, liberty, or property without due process of law, or denying to any person within their jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
