I have just read the most appalling report (in Mail on Sunday)?
The Chinese are slaughtering thousands of cats, many pets surrendered by people frightened to keep them, in the run-up to the Olympic Games.
How can we stop this horrible practice? Any ideas welcome!
I know animal cruelty is worldwide. I know. I wish I could stop it altogether. As for 'cleaning up Bejing' -- do you know what happened when dogs and cats were slaughtered here in the Plague years? The rats proliferated! Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it...

We cant really. We are supporting China by buying things from them, and going into debt. It's terrible, and I've heard that they also eat cats. It's sad, maybe not the eating so much cause India probably thinks the same of us, but the slaughter is terrible.

This is not a nice story to read. Like many stories from china and Asia, there are practices that offend people of other cultures.
China, like many other places, has a overabundance of cats and dogs. They are having the same problems - and same solutions, as Western countries.
Byt he way, Chinese do not keep cats as a rule. Like most Asians, they are afraid of them. Superstitious ideas about cats and their behavior abound in Asia. The slaughter of animals in China is primarily dogs. this is not the firs time this has occurred. Chairman Mao decreed that dogs were dirty (true) and diseased (likely true in china) and they were almost extinct. In fact, most dogs today are small miniatures rather than the larger breeds. Like everything else carried to excess, they are now overbreeding and there is a major problem.
Just lie UK, USA, Canada and other places. It is just not reported in the Chinese newspapers, unlike the West where anything anti China is blown way out of proportion and, as in this case, completely ignores the same problem outside of China Look at Los Angeles, where over 100,000 cats and dogs are murdered every year. Was that in the MAIL as well - No! then why was the China story printed except as an inflamatory exercise.
Let us take care of the unwanted pet problems at home before we interfere with the same problem in China. Unles you want to import all the animals that they have rounded up. This, by the way, is only prevalent in Beijing, already overcrowded with humans. It is as a result of the Olympics and the desire of China to present a clean city for the visitors that are expected.

So what are you saying Orangbuilder??we should turn the other cheek.and walk away?? would you react the same if it was happening on your doorstep? We have a lot of cruelty in the UK but the Far East is way out in front regarding the "disposal"of animals.you only have to see the treatment of their dogs &cats for Food!!!.Their Whaling .Their selling of live foods in Supermarkets .For Example TESCO`S they think its Ok to sell live turtles for food in their far Eastern Stores!!!!
China is in the forfront regarding animal horrors.and Peta is one concern thats doing all it can to stop the butchering of dogs and cats,

How can we hope to stop this practice in China when we still have so many at home that don't understand how important it is to spay/neuter to control an ever growing population. There are still so many cats & dogs being euthinized every year that no one can find homes for. In spite of no kill shelters, & other services it's way to many.

The authorities should have a had neutering scheme in place by now. Animal charities should be asking why this is happening. Should the Olympic ruling body be held responsible?

Don't tell me you actually believe what the Mail writes?
This is the thing about Brits, they don't care at all when some poor granny gets bashed about, but a cat gets killed and they are up in arms. Get a sense of proportion.
