My Dad and I had a Victory Garden. I was about 9 or 10 years old at that time. My Dad had been raised on a farm and knew all the tricks of the trade. I never forgot what I learned from him and planted gardens whenever I could over the years.

We had a Victory Garden.. and when we mowed the lawn we always left dot dot dot dash with a big V on the front lawn

Lincoln Park in Chicago also let people have victory gardens in it...

Almost everyone we know had a Victory garden it was the patriotic thing to do..

also saved the foil from the gum wrappers..made it into a ball

cleaned and flattened tin cans...saved the newspapers in bundles...knit 4 inch squares for an adult to sew together to make a blanket to send to help the war effort..

tore old sheets into strips for bandages for the wounded...

    the memories..they just keep coming.!!!

Both sets of my grand parents were born in the 1880s and I don't remember them mentioning Victory Gardens. They were farmers as my parents were. I guess mom and dad considered it a victory if they could keep the rabbits out of our garden when I was growing up. smile

I don't recall them using the term Victory Garden, but they always had a garden and would do a lot of canning to save the harvest.

  • Yes. I lived with my grandmother and she told me about them. In fact, every spring she would still say it was time to put in the Victory Garden. We lived in the same house that she and my grandfather built, and there was a special area by the back fence where they planted the Victory Garden. I planted seeds in that very spot! Thanks for the memory!

After WWII in NYC, there were many vacant lots around the city in those days.People that lived in the nearby tenements all got together and planted vegetable gardens in the vacant lots.Everyone took a turn tending the garden. If it needed watering, we opened the fire plugs and brought down pails of water.

The Italian people liked to plant fig trees, and in winter they would wrap a mattress around the tree, then put a pail on top.

My grandparents owned a working farm. No need for a victory garden.

My grand parents did. They continued to have an amazing garden in their yard even when they could barely get around. I'll never forget all the flowers as a kid in their backyard, and veggies in the side yard..

My granparents & Mom always talked about it! They had always had a gaden, and it was a way of life!

Granpa said, to be busy working=staying out of trouble!

    Never missed a Meal

They talked about alot of wars, as they were old when I was born, they were born in the 1880's!!

They always had great stories, of which I 've written down for my grankids!
