They were considered revolutionaries. They were considered terrorists. And, though they fail to meet our contemporary standards of the term: yes, in their historical context, they were liberals. To the extent that their liberalism led them to extreme action against the repressive policies of an imperialist government, they were much more than liberal. They were radical leftists.

What we need is more people like them to ensure that the revolution doesn't die under the boot of corporate interests and the imperial government that serves those interests.

I don't think they neatly fit into either category - I'd describe them as radicals. It was very radical at the time to start a new country without a king (although Washington was considered to be crowned as king), and it was radical to allow such freedoms that everday Americans were allowed, where in so many places (other than a few European states) the average person was little more than a slave or serf at the time. Their dislike of big government is a modern day conservative trait - but it is much more characteristic of European liberalism. Perhaps their most radical decision of all was to found a country where religion was not central to governance - there was no leader of both nation and religion, and no official religious doctrine; meaning anyone could practice their religion in relative peace, one of the main reasons for immigration to the US in its early days. This trait is certainly radical, and also fairly liberal.

i think of that they are neither. because of the fact the Conservatives have issues approximately them that not all the founding fathers might accept as true with and a similar is going with the liberals. besides the incontrovertible fact that, i think of that they had in all probability lean in direction of the Conservative edge because of the fact we are for u.s.'s good. yet Thomas Jefferson may be a Democrat, in all probability not a liberal, in simple terms because of the fact of what he believed in and that he grew to become right into a splash extra to the left than a number of the others.

They would be considered liberal. Definitions of words change with time, however. I no longer refer to the secular left as liberals, because there is nothing liberal about them. They hate God, they hate America, they hate the values we stand for, they ignore the sacrifices this country has made, they have what Jean Kirkpatrick referred to as the "blame America first" mentality.

Under the old definition, they would call themselves liberal. But liberal back then meant more libertarian than what liberal means today. They set up a very limited small federal government only after trying it for 12 years with no federal government failed. They were very careful in defining the powers and setting the limitatations of their new government. They'd be spinning in their graves if they knew what a monster it is now.

I really don't think so. I believe they were just a group of men who had real principals. The founding fathers are probably turning in their graves at what we have to choose from. I have never seen such a mess in my country and only hope people will wake up and stop listening to the Oprah's and start thinking for themselves. I now know what they meant when our forefathers said "We've given you a republic, now its up to you to keep it".

To the British they were terrorists. Terminology has changed but back then they would definitely been labeled as liberals.

They were considered "PATRIOTS" The Conservative and Liberal Crapology is just that "Political Crapology!" to fool and to exploit the uninformed public. And the bad thing about it is that the public buys the political crap.

They would have to be liberal. Change and reform generally is considered a trait of liberalism, and I can't think of a bigger change than breaking away from the mother country or a bigger reform than starting a government from scratch.

Liberal -> Enlightenment thinkers who questioned the status quo, believed in the rights of man, etc. The Tories were conservative, i.e. conserve the monarchy.

But I honestly don't think our definitions of the terms would apply because think today's definitions don't really mean anything.
