Honda Odyssey van trans problem.?

My co woker just had a trans rebuilt for $2,300.00 (dealer was going to charge over 4 grand) in an Odyssey with 120k miles, because it would have trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Is this common? I am a huge Honda fan and am always saying how great they are. Lately I have been hearing more about rebuilt engines and transmissions on around 100k mile cars! I used to think it was teenagers burning out their parents' civics and such, but now the van? What's up?

Transmission replacements were fairly common on the 1999, 2000 and 2001 models (though by no means did they affect a high percentage of the vehicles in those years); and honda extended the warranty on those transmissions to 7 years or 100,000 for an internal problem. the problem that was the basis of that warranty extension was fixed during the 2001 odel year transmissions so the Odyssey in 2002 and later did not have the transmisison problems.

your friend was apparently out of the warranty extension period at 120,000 miles.
