Can a Non-Mormon Fit in in the Salt Lake City Area?

I am thinking of relocating to Salt Lake City, UT which I know has a largely Mormon population. I have absolutely no problem with Mormons, but as a Protestant Christian, I am concerned about fitting in and being accepted for what I am in such a largely Mormon area. How do Mormons in UT feel about non-Mormons who move to their community?

I lived in SLC for a few years, I am not a mormon. There was a little bit of cultural shock in the beginning, but I have to say I did not encounter any problems. I did meet some hard-core mormons who took it upon themselves to get me into their church, but after a few times of me telling them I was not interested, they gave up on me. On the other hand, I met lovely, welcoming people.

All in all, it was a positive experience, and I would not mind living there again.

About 50% of salt lake is LDS (a bit less actually). Most Mormons are non-judgmental and accepting, however, we do have some bad apples like everyone else.

Utah is a great place, however, it does have it's quirks. Some people become bitter and angry over these, others are fine with it.

Get to know a bit about the religion and the utah culture.

    Get to know your neighbors.

Feel free to ask any of us about our faith

We have a lot of activities that are very social. You're welcome to attend any of them, however, sometimes we don't make enough time for people outside of the church because we get a lot of social interaction through it.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, Salt Lake City is a wonderful place to live and a great place to raise kids.

There are a lot of folks that are very kind and friendly, and a lot of folks that are not.

I have several friends that are non-Mormon and most of my neighbors are non-Mormon.

I am kind and generous to each and every one of them, we fish together, we camp together, we have them over for Sunday supper and we play games together.

The only preaching I do is by example. I don't smoke with them, I don't drink with them and I don't use foul language or look down on them in any way.

We are all Gods children, He is no respecter of religion, creed, Nation or people or race.

Come see what I mean. I live in Ogden which is about 20 miles South of SLC.

Just remember there are those that do in fact judge people. Mormon and non.

All the Mormon's I know are very accepting.

Lots of people will probably try to tell you that they're going to try to convert you, and I'm not sure, in Salt Lake City they might, but the missionaries I know usually leave and are very polite after I explain that I don't want to convert to Mormonism.

There are other denominations in Utah, I don't think you will be completely surrounded.

Really I wouldn't worry about it. Mormons are nice people. My best friend is Mormon, and she has never tried to convert me, but I do volunteer work at her church, and go to the Mormon Volleyball games, dances, and camping trips. I'm agnostic, and they know it, but they seem to be ok with it.

I think theres actually large number of non-mormons in SLC. My friend grew up there. He's Catholic and no one really told him about the church... so now I am after 21 years of him living there! lol.

There are SOME Mormons who don't like to associate with non-mormons. But not all of us are like that. I think you'll be fine.

It's called the Zion Curtain for a reason.

Many non LDS DO have problems with the LDS in the area. SLC is becoming less LDS all the time, as is Utah, but it's going to be a while before non LDS aren't treated badly in Utah in general.

You should be fine. SLC is a great area and has a significant non-LDS populatio, but City Hall and the courts are chock full of Mormons. It's a reasonably progressive city.

I used to live in SLC. Don't worry - you'll be fine and fit in. SLC in particular is less than 50% LDS now. The surrounding county is more, and Utah County 30 miles south is over 80% LDS.

Mormons will accept you, but sometimes just won't understand you. Don't hold it against them.

One of our Articles of Faith state: "We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may."

So, by doctrine we are taught to let people live how they may. We may try and spread the knowledge that has brought us happiness, but don't hold that against us - we just like to share in a true feeling of good will.

    Travel safely!

Living in and around Salt Lake City is easy for a non-Mormon. I lived there for several months.

I have family members that have lived there all of their lives that are not mormon and they have their own social groups and communities. I think you have to be aware though that the mormon ppl have a political agenda too and they usually get their way in that city (largely republican).
