My dog ate a chocolate bar. Should I take her to a vet?
I got home from a quick trip to the store to get some dog food. While I was done, the dog (a 100 LBS 1 year old mastiff) decided to eat a bar of dark chocolate on the counter.
What should I do? Should I just watch her and hope for the best, or take her to the emergency vet? The bar was approx 1.65 oz and 72% dark chocolate (according to the wrapper).

Given the size of your dog, and relatively small amount of chocolate (compared to the dog) it's most likely OK. Here's a link with information about chocolate poisoning: http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/nutritiondogs/a/ch...
Since your dog is 100 lbs, (45.5 kg), using the low figure of 20mg/Kg of theobromine, your dog would have to ingest about 900 mg. of theobromine, or somewhere around two ounces of unsweetened chocolate. Your dog got a little over one ounce of choclate, so you're probably OK., according to this source.
Still, different dogs may react differently. Some may be more sensitive, some less so. And the 20 mg/Kg is a very conservative number. Just keep an eye on her for the symptoms listed, and if she starts showing any of them, call your vet.

No question take her to the vet.Chocolate can kill dogs...not sure about dark chocolate though.Try calling an emergency vet first.
I know in the past my dogs have eaten a lot of chocolate and not so much as gotten sick. It's sort of like an allergy. Some dogs can die from chocolate, and some can't.Majority DO die from eating chocolate so vets just tell everyone to not feed their dog chocolate to be safe!

No, even with 70% dark, a single bar will do nothing in a dog that large. Do CALL your vet, though and ask the same question: you'll feel better about it.
And remember, grain alcolhol is toxic to humans but we can sure drink a lot of beer without dying. Chocolate is only mildly toxic to dogs.

Phone the vet and ask for advice. Dark chocolate is the worst for dogs. The vet will want to know the type and how much the dog ate.
PS No don't just watch her. She will most likely be OK but because you say its dark chocolate I would be more worried.

just keep an eye on her. Yes chocolate is poisonous to dogs but a large dog like a mastiff probably won't have any problem with it. I wouldn't go to an emergency vet just yet she will let you know if something is really wrong within the hour i am sure.
p.s. your avatar looks a lot like mine i thought i had asked a question for a second and didn't remember LOL!

Don't worry about it. My dog, a small boxer, German Shepard mix, about 45lbs, was left alone two years ago on Easter morning while my family went to church. Not only did he eat a full size chocolate hollow chicken, he also ate two solid full size bunnies. He then ate pretty close to all the little chocolate eggs (yes, in their pretty little wrappers) and the Easter cream eggs (all three). This and the jelly beans, all the peeps, and marsh mellow thingamabobs. He didn't move very fast for a day, and had very colourful poop, but he survived. And I learn ed he could get on top of the fridge three days later to get the stuff I bought my kids to replace what he ate Easter Sunday. He's a really sweet dog.

According to the website I am posting, your dog has very little chance of being seriously poisoned. I highly doubt your dog will die. Worst case scenario will involved diarrhea, upset tummy, possibly some vomiting.....and I would be surprised if all that happens too. Basically, the deadly toxic levels for a dog that weighs 100 pounds is this:
100 ounces of milk chocolate for a 100 pound dog
33 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate for a 100 pound dog
11 ounces of bakers chocolate for a 100 pound dog
The chocolate your dog ate was semi-sweet....so it would take nearly 3 pounds of this type of chocolate to be deadly/cause death. Just keep a close eye on her.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tinyurl.im/77OpO
People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners
