Cat with diabetes ..... ?

My ex-husband has 2 cats that used to belong to me (I currently have 6 pets). The problem is one of the cats he has has just been diagnosed w. diabetes and the cost for her treatment will be $150 -200 per month (for shots of insulin 2x per day, special food, and vet visits, lab test, etc.).

My ex is UNwilling to pay for these new expenses for my cat, but I have 6 pets in my house, and 2 children, and I am struggling financially as it is. :(

I am so heartbroken over this, and I dearly love this cat. I have offered to give up some of the money that my ex pays me, but he is unwilling to give this cat her insulin shots. :(

If I bring this cat back into my house, I will have to keep her isolated in one small room (as she will be attacked by my male cats) and w. 2 small children in the house, I am not sure that is possible; not to mention what quality of life will she have? And at what expense ? (monetary and otherwise)

I am so upset about this. Any advice on what I can do?

You can go to felinediabetes.com and...

    1. learn how to home-test blood glucose,

    2. learn other ways to treat feline diabetes on a budget,

    3. post there about re-homing her if you are sure there is no way that you can keep her. (Members of the diabetic cat board often adopt additional diabetic cats, once they have the knowledge of how to treat the disease.)

You can usually get cheap or free glucometers on-line.

I tested my diabetic cat before every insulin shot. Home-testing saved his life; it let me know immediately when his insulin needs changed, so I didn't end up giving him insulin when his blood glucose was too low.

Please also go to the other links I have provided and read about diet and feline diabetes. Some cats can be diet controlled and can get off of insulin if on the proper diet.

It does not cost much to maintain a diabetic cat. I have two now, used to have three. All adopted from others who would not do the "work." Literally takes me 2 minutes mornign and night.

I hometest so no vet visits. I use a quality insulin, and feed canned food only, low carb. No need to buy vet food, that stuff is junk anyway.

As the previous poster wrote, please visit www.felinediabetes.com.

There are so many ways to maintain your cats health and even with kids, jobs, and other cats many of us do it.

There are feline rescue organizations that might be able to help her find a new home. I had a dog with diabetes and wouldn't hesitate to take in another diabetic dog though, yes, it's expensive and you have to give the shots, buy special food, etc.

My diabetic dog was so brave, she never minded the shots but, poor thing, she hated the special food and forced herself to eat it. I had to dog-proof my kitchen cabinets because she learned to open them and drag out edible food!! yes, she opened a cabinet and ate half a loaf of raisin bread!!

But she was the best dog and I still miss her.

I would keep her in your small room and in time your male cats should accept her. [get them neutered, if they aren't already and make sure she is spayed also]
