Why do some people who lack a basic understanding of genetics claim to be able to disprove evolution?

Besides creationists, does any other group of people claim to be able to disprove a scientific theory that they don't understand?

Update:

Shamgaur: Reread the last sentence of your quote. The key phrase is "if there is such a thing." It remains to be shown that there are any such entities.

Socko: I'm not talking about Christianity. I'm talking about creationism. There are plenty of non-Christian creationists.

I can't think of a single group that fits the description of your second question.

But, that being said, plenty of non-Scientist non-Creationists say stupid things about evolution, too....

(observe all the answers in here that think scientific theories are proved into laws.)

It's something that I find both sides are guilty of. It's simply that people are entrenched in their opinions and therefore the opinions or views of the opposing sides are perceived in simplistic and as caricatures. I don't think it's an attempt to mislead, but is simply people arguing about things they're ignorant of. Examples from both sides that I've seen on R&S: - There's absolutely no proof for evolution (although true to some extent, i.e. that there's no singular piece of evidence that proves it, there is a large body of supporting evidence) - Religion is the cause of all wars/more wars than anything else/more suffering than anything else. - Religion prevents scientific discovery - Islam is a violent religion - Medieval Christians were ignorant illiterate people who believed the world was flat - Theory X disproves evolution... and so on and so on and so on. It gets quite boring after a while, because it's obvious that most people make claims and counter-claims without any thought or research and are just parrotting commonly-held but inaccurate homilies.

    1. I am an atheist, but I accept evolution as a scientific theory that has not become scientific law yet. Thus, science can give solid evidence for evolution, but cannot prove it without doubt.

    2. At least the scientist can admit that he/she/they cannot prove evolution 100% completely. I am waiting for a monotheist to admit that they cannot prove God exists completely. Afterall, the invisible and the non existant look exactly the same.

    3. Not all atheists are totally knowledgable on evolution, and some (like me) do not even care to be. I am not concerned about what man looked like say 20,000 years ago, I am more concerned with being a great husband, and a great dad to my 4 kids, and working hard at work, paying the bills. These things are much more applicable to my life than the silent do nothing invisible god.

    4. I do not know of any groups, but I think all people can acknowledge that Darwin's theory is still a scientific theory, and not a scientific law. So since science cannot prove or disprove it, I do not think there is any group out there that can. Most peoples evidence is "faith" which is not evidence for the existance of God, much less grounds for disbeleif in evolution...

Is this the "lets see who is the most intelligent corner"?

I am a Christian and I have not tried to disprove theory, mainly due to the fact that we all have the right to believe what we choose, and nothing is to be gained from trying to tear down the beliefs of others to prove how 'all knowing' we are.

Theory in itself is unproven, look at a dictionary and find the definition of the word.

I also need to point out that my level of understanding in the field of genetics, has nothing whatsoever to do with evolution.

Are you implying that no geneticist on earth has ever been a Christian, or believed in intelligent design?

It is not up to you to decide how reasonable someones level of intelligence has to be before they can understand such things.

Many atheists have a greater Bible knowledge than some Christians, and some of these atheists are happy to just accept that 'okay I dont believe, but if they want to its fine'.

We all have the right to believe what we believe, and to refuse to believe that someone can be a reasonable, thinking and even highly educated person and still have a faith is ignorance in itself.

well i think basically you dont need the genetics to prove nor to reject evolution.

let alone the creationists who claim the existence of the ... the one who put the things into the motion... [sorry i lack the proper english term].

I believe the most problematic thing on evolution is the fact htat it links the humans with apes and monkeys, which from a reason uncomprehensible to me is very filthy to some people.

You dont need a slightest touch of genetics, OK with exception of the hereditary traits... Actually the knowledge of genetics sometimes even deludes some people by its complexity and reparatory mechanisms.

    to put it simple>

genetics is programming /genes are not a blueprint!/ evolution is improving the program. you do not need the knowledge of the programming language, you need just to understand and accept the algorythms of the feedback.

Source(s): so, there are only TWO things that are necesarry to understand evolution> that 1. traits are changeable and 2. traits are hereditary. understanding these two simple facts is all you need to know to understand the evolution and that is far from genetics :)

Why does this matter so much to you? Why is it so important to prove Christianity is wrong? Why do you have the need to make fun of creationists? I think you need to get help to stop the obsessing about God and Christians.

And the answer to your question is: Most scientists believe in God. They and other Christians do have an understanding of genetics. It does not take a lot of brainpower to understand.

Fact 1: BIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION IS A PROVEN SCIENTIFIC FACT

Fact 2: DARWIN'S EVOLUTION THEORY IS STILL A THEORY, AND THIS IS THE ONE IN QUESTION HERE

Fact 3: EVOLUTION IN GENERAL HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH KNOWLEDGE OF GENETICS

As Infested by Worms pointed out, and correctly so, genetics is the program, and evolution is the debugger.

Fact 4: A THEORY IS A THEORY BECAUSE IT HASN'T BEEN PROVEN. IF A THEORY CAN BE DISPROVED, IT WILL NO LONGER BE A THEORY. DUH!

Micahel Behe is a leading expert in genetics (far cry from your basic understanding) and is not a Christian, but definetly supports the theory of 'Intelligent Design.' Here's a snipit of his theory... Speaking of a single celled organism.

By irreducibly complex I mean a single system composed of several well-matched, interacting parts that contribute to the basic function, wherein the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning. An irreducibly complex system cannot be produced directly (that is, by continuously improving the initial function, which continues to work by the same mechanism) by slight, successive modifications of a precursor system, because any precursor to an irreducibly complex system that is missing a part is by definition nonfunctional. An irreducibly complex biological system, if there is such a thing, would be a powerful challenge to Darwinian evolution. (p. 39)

it's another indication of the stupidity of the average american. you should be worried, evolution/creation debate is the icing on the cake. John Mcain was visiting LaHaye and the Discovery Institute, an Anti-American organization that has a goal of replacing civil law with bible law.

The people who are militantly against global warming, and not just the crazy Christian ones.

While there are still plenty of questions in the whole issue, these people are crazy about it and don't even know how it works. Ex. "Why was it so cold this winter if we have global warming?" Complete ignorance.
