If the world is only 6,000 years old, why do we find such small amounts of Carbon-14 in some organic matter?

Also, why is it that the organic matter with a low ratio of C-14 to C-12 is invariably found in deeper strata?

If you use outside sources to answer the question, please cite your sources in such a way that allows me to find them.

You assume the ratio has always remained the same and/or you knew the ratio when the organism was alive.

Also I agree with everyone else who said the world is not exactly 6,000 years old.

Also in regards to the strata/geological column, there have been petrified trees found standing through the layers among other issues. See link below.

Since you are most likely referring to Christians with the 6,000 years, I must tell you that this only applies to a select few Christians. Many educated Christians realize that time is a man made invention. Who decided that 24 "hours" are in a day, or how long a "second" takes? It was man who invented this time. Thus, time is not necessarily a constant throughout history. Thus the 7 "days" referred to in Geneses could in fact be billions of years. Who's to say God measures time the same way we do?

Now while I believe the earth is much older than 6,000 years, I must also say that Carbon dating does not prove the earths age. The half life of carbon is determined mathematically to be around 5,730 years. Thus, theoretically carbon would undergo a half life every 5,730 years. However, since no experiment lasting 5,730 years has ever been conducted, the half life of Carbon is still just theoretical. Another variable is the composition of the atmosphere. The Carbon14 to Carbon12 ratio has undoubtedly changed throughout time (trapped Carbon from the atmosphere became coal, oil etc.)

Thus, while I agree with you that the earth is more than 6,000 years old, I don't believe that Carbon dating is an accurate way to determine the age of discovered remains. Carbon14 does undergo radioactive decay, but due to all the variables, it is possible (however unlikely) that the oldest remains we've discovered are less than 6,000 years old if Carbon dating is the only proof (which it's not).

The world is not 6,000 years old. My degree is in archaeology and I am a christian. However, the world is more than 6.000 years old. Clovis people were in america 13,000 calendar years ago. I have dug on many biblical and new world sites, and Im telling you the facts here, and in no way does this affect true faith.

The bible, the old testament is based on the Mesopotanian area of the world. The Garden of Eden is located in Iraq, the other biblical sites are Upper Africa, Egypt, Jordan, etc.

There was a whole other world out there, In China, america, south america, australia and upper Europe.

These are my experiences, there was a dramatic climate change that affected all life on earth about 10-11,000 years ago. In any dig site you will see the soil changes, this is in no way degrades the stories of the bible, just the facts it was written about a small portion of this planet.

The earth is more like 12,000 years old. Man created the carbon dating system, God created the carbon and the rate of decay. Ever think that sometimes science isn't right? There was a time when science thought the world was flat and the earth revolved around the sun! Mankind doesn't know everything. Check out the Bible.

The Bible DOES NOT TEACH 4004 B.C. creation. People arrived at that ASSUMPTION by taking DOZENS of scriptures OUT OF CONTEXT.

... Why do people bring C14 dating into the "age of the earth" question since it is ONLY applicable with samples <~50,000 years?

Lightfoot and Ussher MISINTERPRETED numerous Hebrew texts reaching their 4004 B.C. conclusions. The simple definition of 2 Hebrew words should make this clear...

"ben" in Hebrew is defined "son, child (of either gender), descendant (in any generation), offspring (human or animal); by extension: a term of endearment; one of a class or kind or nation or family. A “son of man” is a “human being” (Nu 23:9), a term that often assumes messianic significance (Ps 8)"

"ab" in Hebrew is defined "father, grandfather, forefather, ancestor; (pl.) ancestors (of both genders); by extension: originator, founder (of a city or profession); a title of respect referring to humans or god. The “house of a father” is a subdivision of a clan"

FORCING an improper interpretation on these words leads you to FALSE CONCLUSIONS...

I have no Idea on scientific data for every 10 experts there seems to be 10 different answers. The bible states that one day in mans time is like a thousand in Gods.

In the Bible, its only clear that humanity is 6000 years old.

Many Christians choose to interpret the Genesis creation as allegorical, meaning the earth and even plant and animal life could be much older.
