Why do people not spay their female cats?

I saw this question asked a year ago, and I still see one question after another about pregnant cats and cats giving birth. WHY are those of you asking these questions not having your cat spayed? I honestly would like to know, as I can't think of one good reason not to.

Update:

Added: Why is it okay for healthy, loving adoptable cats to die in a shelter so that someone can have cute kittens or purebred kittens? Every kitten born means a homeless cat already here likely dies.

Update 2:

Added again: There are many, many low-cost spay/neuter programs available for those who are low-income.

I agree. The overpopulation of any household pet is just overwhelming. Especially for cats... at any shelter, they always are offering "2 for 1" on cats and kittens because there are just so many.

A lot of people are just irresponsible. They purchase or find a cat and don't think of the other necessary costs of owning and caring for a pet. Or, they just get the cat because their kid wants it and they end up letting it roam the streets because the parent thinks that their child is mature enough to properly care for it... cat ends up pregnant and in the shelter because owner does not want to 'deal with it', when it was their responsibility in the first place!!!

Also, many people say that they don't have the extra money to pay for a spay/neuter. Again, they shouldn't have gotten it in the first place when they knew if something were to come up, they couldn't afford it. There are tons of places that offer low cost spay/neuter. Cats are so cheap... I know of a place that will spay your cat for about $30.00. That includes the surgery, anesthesia and pain medication for after the surgery. There is also a place that does if for free for families on government assistance.

There is really no excuse for the overpopulation for animals. People are just irresponsible and lazy. The only ones who suffer from all of it is the poor animals that end up in shelters and even worse, the ones that never get adopted from those shelters and end up being euthanized.

It's ignorance and not caring. People think kittens are cute so they let Tabby have a litter never thinking about the thousands of cute kittens who will die because they have no home. Then there are the cheapskates who won't pay for kitty to be spayed. They have internet and eat out 4 times a week but they just can't afford a spay. Some really stupid ones want thier kids to experience the miracle of birth without bothering to figure out what to do with the little miracles after they're born. And the all time stupidest ones justify the pregnancy by saying "all the kittens already have homes". How do they know kitty won't have 12 kittens instead of 4? How I wish people would wisen up.

They get a kitten for free, and they put it off and put it off. They don't really look into low cost spay and neuter because they think they already know they can't afford it, or they can afford it but don't want to spend the money. They think spaying "hurts" the cat, not knowing that spaying protects their cat from reproductive cancers (yes, cats can get breast cancer) and sexually transmitted diseases (like feline AIDS and feline tuberculosis) they think kittens are cute and can get good homes easily, not realizing that "free" animals, like puppies and kittens, are often used to train fighting dogs "to give them a taste for blood" and that every kitten born is a death warrant to a homeless cat waiting in a shelter (and yes, there are kittens at the shelters, too.) Plus kittens given to people "for free" often end up in shelters when they're no longer cute. Easy come, easy go, eh?

For basically the same reason that people don't neuter male cats: They are idiots, and they don't care that millions of cats are euthanized every year because there are not enough homes for for all of them. A lot of people simply think kittens are cute, so they want their female to mate. Some people also act as if it is a huge financial burden to spay a cat, which it isn't. First of all, there are very low cost spay/neuter programs throughout the US. Also, where did these fools get their cats?? Shelter cats should come with a voucher for free spay or neuter if they aren't already fixed (which they should be, to prevent idiots from breeding cats). All of these kittens are a financial burden for both taxpayers and for animal lovers who foster or adopt cats to rescue them from euthanasia. There isn't any excuse for it, it's just one of those things that happens because of the tremendous number of ignorant, selfish, irresponsible people in the world. There are many ways that irresponsible people hurt and leach off of society, and this is one of them.

BTW, I do not hold legitimate breeders or purebred owners responsible. I've never owned a purebred myself, but the blame lies with all of the morons who do not spay or neuter pets. I don't think we should stop "perfecting" specialized breeds because of the overpopulation problem. The problem would still exist, and we can't all hold ourselves responsible for the idiocy of others.

Because they are selfish or ignorant or both. Many people think that a cat should have a litter before they are spayed...this is a myth...a cat doesn't have to have a litter before she is spayed. I had my queen spayed at 4 months of age. The second reason is because they think the kittens would be "so cute" I hear that one a lot. These people need to visit the area shelters and see how many "so cute" kittens are ready to be euthanized. It's soooo sad.

If these people could be taken through the shelters, etc.,& see how many cute little kittens & cats have to be euthnized every year, simpley because there is no more room & there are more coming in every day. No one wants to do this terrible thing but thery are just overwhelmed by the numbers. In spite of the "no kill" shelters they have now somewhere along the line a place is going to run out of room. And this goes for dogs as well. Please wake up out there!!

I think this is an excellent question that I am curious to know the answer for myself. It makes me sick to come in here and read all of those questions. People should know BY NOW to spay and neuter their cats and dogs and yet they STILL don't do it!!!! All I can figure is that they are either 1) stupid, 2) irresponsible and therefore shouldn't have pets, or 3) just can't afford it, or a mix of the three.

Ignorance would be my guess. initially, the cost is a little pricey to have a female spayed. But not having it done is way more expensive in terms of the cats health and all those kittens just one female can have in her lifetime. Unfortunately, many people think of cats as a disposable pet.

I think people dont spay there cats because there planning on maybe selling or making a profit off of the kittens (even tho the kittens usually end up abandoned)

  • 1 decade ago

basically because people who don't do that are ignorant. and just dumb........they would rather spend the time and effort trying to get rid of the kittens that they had, and then a few months later do the same stupid thing.........I have idiot neighbors that do that constantly and it just drives me nuts!

Why they do this, I'll never understand.........for 40 dollars you can get a cat spayed at a low cost clinic, and if you can't afford that, then you can't afford to take care of an animal period.
