When I was 10 it was still Pounds Shiilings and Pence so 50p was equivalent to a 10 Bob Note. That boughts loads... I could go on a weeks holidays with my parents and it would last me a week

When I was 10 in 1941. 50p or ten shillings as it was then. would buy an awful lot of stuff. About 12 pints of beer if you were old enough to drink. Even later when I was 18 for 10 bob we could go to a dance at the local town hall, big band stuff, have a couple of beers, and a fry up supper from a cafe afterwards, all for 50p.

A lot more sweets than the same money would get me today. That or a couple of comics.

A mars bar in 1983 was about 15p so I could have bought three of them and had 5p change for a bag of crisps. Today, I've seen some shops charge 45p for a mars bar, and 5p wouldn't be of much use at all in getting anything else!

A business that I did when I was about 10 was going around to my neighbors and offering to spray-paint their address number on the curb for them to make their house easier to find. You only need a can of white spraypaint for background, a can of black for the numbers, stencils for the numbers, and a big rectangle stencil for the background. It's easy, nobody really thinks to do it for themselves, and it's a quick way to make some money. You go around and canvas your neighborhood, mark down everyone who says yes, and then you take a Saturday and go do all of them at once. I charged $5 per house and got about 1 out of every 6 or 7 houses to say yes. Another classic idea is basic gardening like watering plants or pulling weeds. Probably too young to do babysitting or lawn mowing, but a kid can pull weeds or spread mulch for $10 hour.

    School dinner

I used to get a bread loaf, cut in half and buttered by the baker. Then filled with chips at the chippies next door.

Followed by an ice bun from the cake shop

    all for 10p

I think as i was 10 thats 1980 so i reckon about 5 bags of crisps for 50p, possibly 2 mars bars .

When i was 10 years old it was still called 10 shillings and had another 2 years to go before decimalisation

when I was 10, there was no such thing as 50p! Decimalisation began when I was 11 or 12

10 shillings (50p) was a lot of money when I was 10. My pocket money would have been less
