    They were named after the Spanish Explorer Amerigo Vespucci who helped found much of South America.

    Columbus and Vespucci landed in Nicaragua, in a region rich in gold called Amerrique. Later on Vespucci changed is name from Alberigo to Amerigho.

    Basically, the naming of America originated from natives, not from Europeans.

    Martin Waldseemüller was the first to use the term. He was a cartographer and on a map he made named it America after Amerigo Vespucci because he was wrongly informed that Vespucci had been the one to discover the Americas.
