If gluttony is a sin, how come so many Americans are clinically obese?

What with America being the uber Christian state that it is and all

First of all, two wrongs don't make a right. Homosexuality is not any less (or more) of a sin when someone ignores any other teaching of the scriptures! If we could use that logic, we could not say stealing is wrong because some Christians lust. We could not say murder is wrong because some Christians sometimes lie. You see, just because something else is wrong and ignored by many who profess to be "Christians", that does not excuse other sins. And just because some so called "Christians" excuse or ignore a sin, that does not mean the Bible does also! The word "glutton" is found only twice in the KJV (Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:21). Similarly, the word "gluttonous" is only found twice in the KJV (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34). (Some other translations also use these terms in Proverbs 23:20, 28:7 and Titus 1:12) A "glutton" is not simply someone who overeats. This term involves a greedy attitude, someone who has no self-control, someone given loosely to excessive living, and having a sense of entitlement. The sin of gluttony may be manifested in someone eating too much out of greed, taking an excess that will leave others without their basic needs. Gluttony shows a lack of love and concern for others. Whenever a preacher speaks of helping the poor, loving your neighbor, and staying away from loose living, laziness, etc., he is preaching against gluttony, even if that word is not used. So yes, many times Christians do speak of gluttony, but even if we did ignore that, it would still be wrong,; and if we do "gloss over" some sins, that does not excuse other sins! Sin is sin whether we talk about it or not!

I don't think America is particularly Christian - they've got loads of weird, non-conformist fundamentalist groups which claim to be Christian; in reality they are just money-making schemes which the gullible Americans fall for, hook, line and sinker.

It's right what you say about them being fat though - I'd say morbidly obese, rather than clinically obese!

We are in no way a Christian nation sorry but that is getting old.

Next the food is so filled with perservatives and chemicals you could eat like a bird and still gain weight so glutteny is actually excess of anything not just food. Next those stupid charts that say we are obese are garbage. They say I am suppose to 150lbs. I haven't been 150 lbs in 30 years when I was 12.

Obesity isnt caused just by overeating.

Yes it is a cause, never said it wasnt, but it isnt the ONLY cause

A person can get obese from starving themselves and then binging.

A person can get obese off of medicine(s).

A person can get obese off a thyroid problem.

    etc.

There is more than one reason for a person getting obese then just eating tons of food.

Yes, I realize the popular answer would be, "Stupid fat cows just dont know when to stop shoving the food in their faces! ha ha ha!"

But I guess I'm not very popular.

But if being popular means being verbally abusive and lying...then people may call me dork.

"Not your Average" has sure worked up an appetite!

We all sin and it's very easy to get obese in this country and culture. It's hard to be a Christian where it's easy to be a Christian and it's easy to be a Christian where it's hard to be a Christian. I suppose there aren't many obese Christians in communist China.

    under active thyroids my axe...

I used to weight just under 100kg, then I started moving my butt and and stopped overheating.

Even if SOME people has tyroids problems, this means that tit is difficult for them to lose weight, not that it is normal to weight like a whale cub.

So to all those Phelps like animals who say that aids has been sent to punish gays I say: maybe cardiovascular diseases have been sent to punish fat people. Repent!

Also: if I counted all the gals who told me they had metabolic problems at losing weight it would make up the 80% of the women I know.

One that eats to excess? I think most of us, have eaten to excess on Thanksgiving. Involving direct observation of all the family that is there and sleeping on the couch.

A weakened state of human nature in which the self is estranged from God, an offense especially against God?

There are many obese in all parts of the world.

Gluttony is a sin yes because our body is the temple of the holy spirit and we should take good care of it.

  • Um. I don't think they were talking about clinical gluttony. Here's the perfect example where the word was translated as gluttony, but to be taken spiritually, the word would have been, IMHO, "excessive"...

The US has no official religion! Just blame Bush, is that easy enough! Your being extremely prejudice! Sure some are hypocrites, but you can't judge a whole nation by some of its poeples actions!
