Wow. Did Japan Just Kill Off Fansubs?

Good news everybody! It appears that Japan has began to kill off fansubs! Maybe even the American Anime Industry as well!

GONZO has just announced that they will be releasing Blassreiter and The Tower of Druaga online streaming AND subbed simultaneously with them airing on tv, FOR FREE.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-03-21/go...

Is this the beginning of the end for the fansub community? Is Japan going to cut off the American Licensor middleman, and cripple the American Industry?

What are your opinions and view on the matter, and are you excited about this latest developement?

Update:

Chu: It means Japan is finally waking up. They are beginning to give us anime for free (probably with commericials) with subtitles the second it airs on tv in Japan. If this becomes the norm- then we won't need fansubs anymore.

There will still probably be illegal downloads though if the anime isn't streamed on a decent quality site. But they will just rip the subs instead of making fansubs themselves.

jeremy: Nothing is concrete yet, and obviously the American industry won't stop licensing anime in it's entirety- but if Japan is releasing free subs instantly and legally, I can see a decrease in licensed titles (especially the less popular titles).

超常現象に: Moot, is that you?

    >finally they UNDERSTAND the problem.. kudos to every one of those people who have worked hard telling them that in order to combat fansubs, you must join them.. i'm intrigued to see the quality of it(the subtitles i mean)

    >don't get me wrong, it's just that many ppl in the industry blame fansub for the declining no. of sales when they know that anime viewers nowadays want their anime very fast, as fast as like a day after the show's release in Japan (case in point naruto and bleach) and they totally ignored fansub's contribution towards the anime industry and label them as petty thieves (when these fansubbers are the same people who go and buy those DVDs and other merchandise and spread the anime love)

    >i agree than fansubs are illegal but they are still popular cuz that's what the ppl want..rather than suing the fansubs and threatening the anime viewers(odex singapore) this is a better way

    > i love fansubs by the way (it's like watching an anime with a lot of personalities cuz every fansub group is different) and shall sorely miss them (the karaoke sub, the colorful wordings, the translator's notes) and i hope this new online streaming is as good, if not better ^0^

    >>thanks for the news!!

I love this!! Not that I don't download and enjoy fansubs myself, but to have series subbed by the Japanese and legally is really awesome!! It won't make me feel bad for enjoying their product for free and the people who created and worked so hard on it won't be jilted b/c of fansubbing. Plus, if this becomes the norm for most anime series, then we'll have more available to us; Series we would never see get a US license b/c it's bankability here may be questionable. I'm glad they're finally wisening up and getting the money they desrve from this b/c believe me, this will pay off.

I think this wouldn't harm the American anime industry at all. there are still people who would want to own the DVDs or hear it dubbed. So....I'm thinking positively here and going for a win/win situation.

  • I like it - that means anime will become more and more accessible to everyone all over the world, crossing borders and nations. And that's awesome.

I don't think this new approach towards anime would topple the American anime industry - instead, this might help increase its power and influence in America even more. The international language now is English and of course, people would be very interested in listening to their fave animes being English-dubbed. In case if you haven't noticed, the English dub animes are getting better and better, even if its by the smallest bit.

Wow, after thinking about it for a while, this is actually really awesome. Not only do we get these episodes as soon as they come out, but they will already be officially subtitled . . .and free ^^

This doesn't mean we won't see anime being licensed for release on DVD anymore, right? Then this wouldn't be as good

The way these animals are being treated is horrific and should be stopped. But animals (pigs, cows, chickens etc) are treated just as badly in this country. Its just seen as more acceptable to mistreat these animals. It is time to do something, but not just about dolphins because they are 'pretty' or 'beautiful' but for all animals because they are living creatures.

  • NOOOOO THEY CAN'T!!!! I LOVE FANSUBS!!!!

Now I'm going to be depressed for the rest of the day. SAVE THE FANSUBS!!!!AND They can't stop showing anime in America either!!! It's more popular here than in Japan!!

    *Edit*

Wait I just saw the link right now and that actually sounds pretty awesome..........but DON'T KILL THE FANSUBS PLEASE!!! And then we wouldn't get to download?!! UNFAIR!!!

Depends is it the end of the world? If it isn't the end of the world then it isn't the end of anything anime.
