My 1 1/2 yr old has really dark circles under her eyes???

Its definatly not from lack of sleep, but I've heard that this can be caused from lack of Iron is this true?? and if so what extra vitamin supplements can I give her. I can't give her straight Iron tablets

Lack of iron is only one possibility. Is she taking a vitamin? Is her poop green? If so, she may be getting plenty of iron but not enough vitamin C to absorb it. Or she isn't absorbing it because she has a gastro problem.

The other thing is food allergies. My children are allergic to dairy (NOT lactose intolerant, allergic to the whey protein in cow's milk [eggs are not dairy]). If my son licks something with dairy he will get allergic shiners under his eyes, around his anus (commonly put off as diaper rash), and very loose poop. On occassion he will vomit. My daughter is less allergic and can tolerate small amounts (on a regular basis she is NOT in contact with her allergens, but for holidays I will let her have a little). On a larger scale, she gets hives on her cheeks and neck that do not spread, a nasty attitude and a belly ache.

My opinion would be to start with the pediatrician for routine blood work to check the iron levels. Keep a log of every little thing that goes into her mouth. If her iron comes back low, but your log shows she should be getting adequate iron, head to a pediatric gastroenterologist.

I don't think the doctors want you to add straight iron unless a blood test shows anemia, because too much iron can be bad too. My son is on a liquid iron made by Enfamil called Fer-in-sol, but the pediatrician is going to retest him to make sure he still needs it later this week. You can probably give a small dose of liquid vitamin with iron without a problem, but don't go overboard without talking to your doctor. The product is called Poly-vi-sol. I've attached a link below so you can see what the package looks like. I buy it at the regular grocery store in the vitamin section, but a pharmacy would have it over the counter.

Yes, I've heard the reason children have circles under their eyes is because they're mal-nourished, and that's not your fault, it's hard to make sure they're getting all they need in a day! I would recommend a powder-form vitamin supplement that you can mix with her juice. Call your local pharmacy or do some research online. My sister uses a powder vitamin supplement and her kids aren't aware of it at all, and it's really helped them get all the nutrients they need. Hope this helps!! Good luck!

I've heard that it can be a symptom of lactose intolerance. Have you notices any sensitivities to dairy? (Some kids get bad diaper rash when they eat too much dairy)

    Definitely ask your doctor.

If you want to up her iron, spinach is the way to go! However, a lot of fruits have iron too. Raisins are a pretty good source of iron and toddler friendly.

  • a lot of times it has to do with iron. you should ask a doctor if they have some iron tablets for babies.
