I don't see the point,if you smoke you smoke.End of.I know i'd track them down in Outer Mongolia if i had to x

I personally don't see a reason why they should be hidden. If people want to smoke, they will smoke regardless of where the cigarettes are located. Some people are so hooked that if the government required cigarettes to be located in the very back of stores, people would still go through the trouble of walking back there just to get their fix. It's just like the whole censorship idea. If underage listeners want to hear Snoop Dogg, they'll still find a way to get their hands on his CDs, regardless of if everyone is carded to make sure they're old enough to purchase the music. The only thing you can is warn about the serious effects of smoking and let people make their own decisions.

The idea is just a political gag.......... trying the populist bit!
Concealing the damned things will achieve absolutely nothing!
History demonstrates it will have no effect. Back in the first half of the last century most cigarettes were sold through home franchises. The smoker would ask around as to who had the local franchise, knock on the door and ask for his/her required brand........... nothing on show, not even a shop counter!
None of this deterred youngsters from smoking! I started at the age of 11. I'd con the vendor into believing the cigs were for my mum, aunt, uncle, or the tooth fairy! I was not an unusual case! (I gave up some 28 years ago)
Getting rid of vending machines is a good idea, however.

That'll stop the smokers...just like private shops do no trade due to having blacked out windows.....and hard drugs are never sold due to being very secretive things. Seeing as people have to ask for cigarettes anyway I can't really see them not being on display making any difference. In fact the forbidden is usually more tempting.

No it's a useless suggestion and a lame attempt to 'tackle' the smoking problem.
Funny though - the goverment are happy to reap the millions on tax every year from ciggies. If they are that concerned about people's health why don't they just ban them? It's all about the money.

People will still buy them. It's not like removing sweets from next to the checkout - cigarettes aren't something you buy on impulse. If someone is going to buy them they will, regardless of whether they're on show or not.

i dont know how they are going to get round this, with the present layout in the shop where i work. its impossible to keep all the different brands under the counter. and the price has to be displayed, so dont know how they are going to accheive this at the moment

No, it's a legal product and there's no reason to hide or ban it. I'm a non-smoker (allergic in fact) and I'm getting so sick of all this anti-smoking sentiment.

Heroin and crack cocaine are hidden from view - but there's still a problem. So no - cigarettes shouldn't be hidden because hidden or not there will still be a problem.

It won't make any difference to smokers but it may help prevent the next generation from falling prey.
