What is the best way to find a rental in another state if you can't visit?

I'm moving from a college town to another college town several states away. I'm in school now and don't have time to get out to the new town to look for a place. I'm having a hard time finding anything listed on the internet and I am really worried that if I agree to rent a place site unseen that it will be horrible. I don't know anyone where I am moving. How do I find a rental in a college town that doesn't make me want to bleach every thing? This is especially hard since I have a large dog who requires a backyard.

Update:

I've looked at all the rental sites online (seriously I googled, I looked at craigslist everything)

The real estate agent thing is a good idea, I have called one. He only called back recently but I missed the call. I like the idea of the extended stay hotels but I worry that there aren't any that will accept dogs, and I can't very well leave him there while I go house hunting. as for apartment sharing, if it were just me that might be fine but I'm moving with my fiancee and it would be weird.

It's best to call a well established Nationwide Real Estate Company.

Call them direct or contact one of their offices in your present

    location.

They will be glad to get a referral fee off of them.

    Good Luck.

I would tell you Gain.com.....but they have trackers and you may

receive a lot of pop ups from them.

    April,

How about utilizing a short term rental place in the new city while you check things out? They are extended stay hotels with weekly and monthly rates. You can still do online research and then do physical stuff on evenings and weekends. Gotta be better than blindly trusting an unknown agent.

There's a new invention called a Greyhound Bus and an even newer one called an airplane. There is using a dorm for your first semester. Get rid of the dog.

    http://www.craigslist./

Simply click on the town you are moving to.

    Check out RoomShare on Craigslist.

Lots of college kids share rooms as they make their way through college. Ask the person who owns the house if you can bring your dog.

Many apartment complexes have tight restrictions on dogs.
