Why is it that people call him, "Bush" instead of President Bush?
Serious and thoughtful answers would be appreciated. I just don't understand their logic on this one. When Carter was President, they still called him President Carter and not just, "Carter." Is it just showing my generations lack of respect for authority or is it just stupidity? Why do they not show respect to their elders, yet they expect respect from others? It has just been bugging me, so I thought I'd ask to see what other's thought!
Neenie- Yes, that is also disrespectful. Don't think I was asking this question only because I'm a Republican, because I wasn't. On Yahoo! Answers, I don't take it offensively, but I do try to point it out to them. Last time I checked, in school you could have hated a teacher, yet you still had to call them Mr. or Mrs. Shouldn't it be even more so with the President? I could not stand Bill Clinton and I still referred to him as President. It's sad that no one shows respect for anyone anymore.

How refreshing to see that there is still those out there that has character. Respect is a wonderful thing. Even if you don't agree with a person's politics, at least one could show respect for that person's 'being'. And respect should be shown for achieviement, as well as, the oval office. Keep up the good work! You are a light that shines in the darkness.

wow....it's been along time since i have seen so much bitterness. i have no problem with occasionally dropping the "president" if it is done basically as much with one president or ex-president as another, or if it has been done out of some kind of new social trend, but when it is done intentionally by the press or an organization claiming to be unbiased, it is propaganda. just like pictures, of all the tens of thousands of pictures that have and are being taken of PRESIDENT bush, the ones that make it on the headlines always have his mouth hanging open, or with some dumb look on his face, this is a perversion of responsibility. it seems that it has come to the point in this country that when one group doesn't get it's way, they act like a child and play silly games, they run and "tell", they make up story's, and they pout. they don't face problems or differences in a mature fashion, they do not discuss, they call names, rant and rave. wouldn't it be nice if we all treated each other with respect and worked out our problems? when i was a child, i thought like a child, i played like a child, i am no longer a child, i will put away my childish, (well most of them anyway) ways.

I agree ,Its a lack of respect...I feel the same way you give the office of The President Respect..Even Though Bill Made it a laughing stock..
The only President I think that was bad enough to call him on it is Carter..Man that dude was weak...I remember the gas lines..
The hostages in Iran, When were they let go???
When Regan was Inaugurated..Iran is crazy but not stupid..Now they are at it again because of weak liberals siding with them in congress.

You are right on it is just the most disrespectful thing that people do to refer to our President as Bush. The man is still a sitting President and people should give him that much respect. I still call all the other ones President, even though they are ex-presidents because that is still their title. This generation is rowdy and does not respect authority because they have not been disciplined nor taught any respect. This new generation seems to be all about money and things instead of values with total disregard for any kind of authority. Really scarey, isn't it? Just hope these kids are smarter than they look.

I've noticed that as well. Clinton was called "President Clinton" by the media as well. I honestly think that it's because the media hasn't liked Bush since the 2000 elections. I personally don't call him President Bush and didn't call any of the former presidents by their titles. I think it's just a general relaxation of formality that my generation (20 somethings) has been experiencing. Older generations, for example, would call their teachers "Mr or Mrs. So & So" while my teachers and even most college professors introduced themselves and instructed us to call them by their first name. I think titles are just becoming less emphasized in today's world.

I think it's just a norm these days. I notice a lot of my classmates calling people either by their first names or their last names which i find very disrepectful. Such as Edgar Allan Poe...dont just call him "Edgar" or "Poe", he signs his work with the rest of his name for a reason. So i believe that its not just president Bush, but also many other figureheads in our society, whether it be in politics, literature or art, that are obtaining this disrespect. As the English language changes to fit our vocabulary, i believe that etiquette must change as well, and this must be a change in etiquette to fit our society. I dont like it too much tho.

It is just one way they can show their disrespect for him, by denying him his title. You see it every day especially in a projects and gang infested neighborhoods. Young (wannabe) tough guys will drop the title (Mr., Mrs., Miss.)or word of respect (sir, madam) when speaking about someone they dislike.

We tend to call him Bush because he has been a topic of discussion around family tables for the last eight years. We leave off the Formal title because he is more like family than our President.
He's a type of guy with whom one can sit down and have a barbecue, rather than have him ask if you want to join him and his wife to a night at the opera.
Comparing him to Hillary or Obama, I think if either of them were to win the Presidency and you called them Clinton, or Obama, their answer would be:
"That's President Clinton to you, peon!"
"That's President Obama to you, fool. I've worked my way through way to much oppression, and I deserve it!"

As more of our population becomes independent of the institutions that kept traditions in social discourse a part of the culture, so we have a relaxation of standards of socially acceptable behavior.

Because they are childish morons that think they have the smarts to run a country, What I think is funny these are the same people that think we are in an illegal war which is a matter of opinion but think illegals are not bad which they are and is a matter of a FACT.
