Don't you people know about GOOGLE?
I'm speaking to a small amount of you out there who appear to never be able to do a simple search on Google and get the answer yourself.
In fact, in a lot of cases, it would be QUICKER to go to http://www.google.com/ and type in your subject.
http://www.wikipedia.org/ is another example where the majority of info is derived from a lot of dedicated answerers on here.
Another would be initiative.
But my point - and my question is - why do you feel the need to hear this information from other people when you can easily find it yourself?

because people want a dialogue and input from someone's personal experience. what do you think? don't you know that people don't even need GOOGLE to look something up, they can use the web browser they have, for whatever ISP.
Why would you even need to ask this? Is this a rant against questions you think are silly? It sounds like a rhetorical question, you don't seem to think that people are really unaware of google... do you think people really don't know?

Maybe some of the questioners are lonely and looking for some kind of human contact, even if it's just through a keyboard and a monitor. It's a better feeling if you believe there's another human being on the other end.
And let's face it, we are social creatures, not robots.
(OK, OK, as I Google to help with an answer, I sometimes wonder "Hey, they could do this just as easily as I am!")

It just seems nicer to be able to actually talk to real people out there and get answers from experienced people rather than just doing a boring, flat search on the internet. The internet isn't always reliable, but first hand experience is. (not saying that all people on Yahoo! Answers are honest and experienced...just in general)

Listen my little pretty, Im in Kansas. Yahoo is a fun community Google is like Gross and informationally boring... Give me worthless points and cyber friends.... Can can gross I mean Google do that?
Try googling being social and community benifits. See if you get any friends online from a server that will only provide information,,,
Now click your slippers 3 times and say out loud, there is no place like yahoo, there is no place like yahoo, there is no place like yahoo
If you end up in Kansas, please stop by and say hi, bring a buscuit for Toto...

Hearing of another person's experience is frequently worth more, than information you might read on a website.

Yeah, all that's already been said, AND sometimes people are just too lazy to look it up for themselves. I never, ever answer questions re: homework. I already have my BA. I'm not going to earn one for someone else too :-) Folks need to learn to think for themselves.

Sometimes someone else has maybe gone through the experience and have first hand knowledge, which is better that book knowledge.
