Can EMTs intubate their patients?
I always see doctors intubating patients, never EMTs or nurses. Does anyone know if in PA it is legal for an EMT to intubate a patient who has stopped breathing? I desperately need an answer quickly for a family member in a coma.

Honey if you had only an EMT that was able to intubate your family member and he or she knew what they doing... legal or not wouldn't you want them to TRY!!! Remember these guys are out there in the field with the bare minimum of assistance. I tip my hat to anyone that tries! I have intubated many patients and have missed a few times of course we all do! So I don't know about you but if an EMT came to answer my 911 call and found me down, not breathing and wasn't able to ventilate me properly with an ambu bag then by God I hopes he attempts an intubation,
Some ambulances have with them LMA's which is not for the airway but it blocks the esophagus and allows one to ventilate through that tube.
I wouldn't care if it was legal or not I would care more that they did all they could.
Good luck... Go easy on the EMT!

It depends on the laws of the state and regulations of the agency/hospital the person works for. Some common people who intubate are Physicians/Respiratory Therapists/Paramedics/EMT's.

i know in most states they cant....most nurses can't either....however if an EMT basic is working with a paramedic on a truck and the situation is urgent enough, the EMT-B can (he/she will be operating under the paramedic's license) if they are competent and the paramedic delegates the task to him.....as for nurses, i dont know why many nurses cannot intubate....its not an extremely hard thing to do....does your family member have an advance directive/ living will? and if they are in a coma arent they already in a hospital?

It depends on the level of training. In my state, EMT's, PA's, and Nurse Anesthetists with appropriate training are allowed to use various techniques, including intubation, to protect the airway of an unconscious victim
