What sort of power supply should I get?

I'm getting an HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop. I'm not very tech-savvy, so if you friendly folks out there could phrase your answers in a way a n00b could read, I would appreciate it. Here are what I think are the relevant specs:

--Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 8MB cache

--3GB DDR2 RAM

--2 x 320GB SATA HDD

--NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (256 MB) [I intend to upgrade this someday, maybe to something like a GeForce 8800GT]

--Vista Home Premium

It comes with a 300W power supply, but lots of reviews of the system seem to recommend upgrading. So which wattage should I look for? And what sorts of other stuff like connections and fans and belts? And how much should I lay out for it? I'm not a very high-end user, but I want to be able to handle some decent computer games and have something that can handle applications several years from now.

Thanks for your help!

I would look for a 500w or more power supply with plenty of 12v rail amps.

This is a very nice PSU:

you haven't got the money for to purchase an impression grant. the most inexpensive you'll discover that isn't garbage high quality is a Corsair CX 600, for style of 60. i'd use a Seasonic S12II 520 myself, yet it truly is somewhat extra money. to save money for a respectable power grant, evaluate a quad middle processor. do not forget that domicile windows (as a lot as domicile windows 7) isn't SMP-conscious. which means that purely the first 2 cores of a multi-middle processor are used. So going with a quad middle processor gained't influence performance in any respect, assuming you've been making plans to run domicile windows. the different situation with this construct is the wifi card. All wifi playing cards have a topic by technique of layout. the placement is glaring...the antenna is blocked by technique of the computer case. in case you want wifi on a dektop, purchase your self a linksys variety USB wifi adapter. then you may placed that on a USB extension cable, if necessary....for extra perfect reception.

well the power supply dont have anything to do with the performance of the computer the only reason you should upgrade is if HP says they cant build it with that power supply and it will warn you if you need to......if you do want to upgrade get a 500 watt

I recommend Antec "True Power" supplies. They cost a little more, but buying a cheap power supply is just buying trouble.

Here is a 550W model that would carry your system for now, and have some reserve for future expansion:
