Do you think Gael Monfils has a good chance at upsetting Roger Federer today?

Gael Monfils is a very talented rising star, unfortunately beset by injuries recently, but is healthy again. Roger Federer has shown that he is not as invincible as he once was, especially of late. Does anybody want to make a prediciton here?

Update:

Rafanadalgirl and Gina D, I like the fact that you're going out on a limb and picking Monfils.

Hot Chick nailed it -- dead nutz. 6-3, 6-4. She deserves the best answer.

I would have thought that Monfils might have been able to pull an upset, given Roger's recent poor form. It look like he got some of his quickness back. Predicting Monfils to win would have not been much of going out on a limb, considering how badly Roger's been playing. I even stated this in another answer.... that Monfils could take him out.

When he plays poorly, it's pretty obvious his footwork is sluggish -- he doesn't set up properly, and starts spraying his forehand. But it seems like he was moving well today. Maybe he's got his legs back. I hope he keeps up the good form.

gannoway made a good observation that Monfils stays too far back to dictate against Roger. That's exactly what happened tonight. Shows he knows his tennis.

His backhand still doesn't have the sting it used to. I think he's hitting it a little late. It's still a vulnerability. He used to rip it more loosely... hit it flatter and penetrate the court more with it. Now, it seems like he hits it too safe, loopy and short -- it's attackable. Wasn't always that way.

I'm going to go with RafaNadal girl and say 'why not' and pick Monfils to win. in 3 sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

    or Roger in 2 6-4, 7-5

Source(s): www.tennisopolis.com A very fun new tennis site. I just did a Draw Competition there, and I've already lost, since Novak is out. But I picked Novak and Roddick originally in the finals.. I also thought Isner would play Roger and win!

Gael Monfils is athletic but he stay too far back to beat Roger Federer on hard court.

its really difficult to predict since monfils is only now just returning from injury so there is a rust element to remember and of course roger isn't playing well,no. but given the levels of each player,i would have be safe and say roger will pull this one out.

Well it's really hard to tell. If Federer has recovered from his mono, then Monfils has no chance. But if Fed hasn't recovered then I give Monfils a chance because if Mardy Fish could beat Federer then Monfils can. But once Fed recovers totally...he'll win consistently again.

I think he does. Federer normally would be the overwhelming favorite, but he looks very vulnerable these days. I won't be surprised if Monfils pulled off an upset.

If you want a prediction. Let's go with a hard fought Federer win.

that a tough one. i actually picked Fed to win in the Pick Em' challenge on rootzoo...but I can see Monfils winning..so i'll say Monfils 7-5, 6-4...i doubt it but why not?

    Yes Roger in straights 4 & 3

    monfils lost.

seems like federer is having his way cleared out for him. Looks like this tourney should be no problem for him.

Wawrinka out from next round (3rd round)

    hewitt out (4th round)

Tsonga/roddick (qtr's) : Tsonga is my only last hope. Roddick is Fed's bunny so Fed will defeat him even if Fed had one of his legs tied up.

    andy murray out (semi's)

djokovic out (finals): rafa is still there but he too might go and even if he meets fed in finals, I don't give him much of a chance.

i say roger in three sets, monfils is not a bad player, he will get many balls back cause of his speed.
