If a hard drive fails then for all practical purposes the data on the hard drive is lost, unless you want to pay a lot of money to data restoration services. Because the hard drive is being replaced it is necessary to reinstall the default operating system and programs that came with your computer. So yes, it does need to be restored.

When they replace the HD, it will be blank. You cant restore what isn't there. When you hear people talking about a restore, they are talking about reinstalling a copy that was on a hidden section of your HD.
You need to have the operating system and drivers installed. It is easy, and we will all be willing to help you, there are alot of really nice people here. If you have a major name brand computer, you can ask for a new copy of the OS. Usually they will send it free for registered users, even if it is out of warranty. You may have to pay shipping and handling, but that is fair. If you dont have the cd or they wont send you one, you will have to purchace a new one.
Most mfgrs do NOT have cd's with the drivers availible past a few months, but will give you free downloads of it. You will probably have to load the chipset driver and the NIC driver onto a cd or a thumb drive, after you install them you can download the rest to the computer.
You can do the install process yourself, you dont need to pay staples or anyone else. It just takes about 40 minutes of waiting.

Ahh..well there are a few explanations...if your hard drive had viruses you might need to do a system restore if they cannot be removed. Now if they are replacing your hard driver with a blank drive you do not need a system restore, what you need is a new system install..because there is nothing on the hard drive to restore. If you need to get data from the other hard drive you can plug it in to one of the other hd ports in your computer and designate it as a slave drive and retrieve information from there

When you remove a hard drive, you also remove every piece of data that is on your computer. that includes any pictures, songs and your operating system as well. So Yes. You're computer will have to either be "restored" using your recovery discs, or a clean windows installation.

a system restore will not do anything because it is a new a hard drive.
doing a restore point requires to have a restore point from a previous calendar date..
the only thing that they could do is just re install everything from scratch...(operating system, drivers, softwares etc.)

They won't be able to do a system restore seeing as the hard drive will be blank. All they (or you) have to do is image to the new one; if the old hard drive is inaccessible you'll have to reinstall your OS from scratch.

They will need to install windows and all your software again, but if you have the cds and they are charging you, do it your self. If you need help with this email me, I have done it many times.
