SAD - not another set of parents choosing prayer over doctors?

This story really hits close to home. I used to be a nanny for a little girl who lost her father to liver cancer. Her parents were very devout Christian Scientists, who believe in the power of prayer and deny the existance of sickness, germs and the ability of doctors.

The child's mother told me of a story when she fell off her horse and dislocated her shoulder. Her parents and her gathered in the barn on a pile of straw and prayed, and eventually her shoulder popped back into place. I can provide a logical theory to what happened using real sources, science and my own brother to prove what I believe happened, but I kept my mouth shut.

It frightens me terribly that there are children all around the world who would be subjected to such torture and agony due to their parent's ignorance. I fully support the right for everyone to believe what they will, but when a child isn't old enough, nor educated enough to make their own decisions about their own faith, they are the innocent ones. They are the ones who shouldn't suffer and die because of what they don't know.

Yeah-that's freaking retarded. Thats why we have doctors and medicine. As for what's wrong with people- I think the election of GW Bush showed that stupidity is the norm in America. I mean- If you don't believe in science, why would you believe anything a doctor has to say? Speaking of which, Science isn't something that should be "believed in" because we have evidence for it- but the Creationists seem to have convinced a lot of people that science is as made up as religion.

Oh yeah, I was pissed when I saw it was WI too. Then I saw they moved there from CA, and was less surprised... :(

SAD - yes another set of parents - when I was a child and teenager, my parents chose biblical punishment for my neurological problems. Now , as an adult, what turned out to be neurofibroma tumors on my spine ate too far gone for the doctors to do anything about it.

It is SAD when parents choose biblical prayer and punishment over seeking proper medical care for their child

So, they don't use doctors, but they do believe in lawyers.

I don't understand how any parent could, or would, be able to just watch as that child became so sick, and only got worse, and not do everything possible ( in THEIR power ) to help that child. As a person AND a Christian, I was always being reminded that God helps those that help themselves. I believe if he gives you the tools, it is your job to use them in the best way possible.

This is the part of different religions that always gets me... each religion sets their own rules on how things will be. Each one says, and does things that I just do not understand.

sometimes there are things that you can only pray for.

and sometimes there are things that you can pray for and also seek a Doctors help.

the Bible says if you are walking like Jesus Christ no longer Sinning then he will take Care of you he will be your Doctor. you have to keep your end of the Deal for him to keep his. but asking him in prayer for his help is always a Good thing he will help you. i seen prayer bring more people back as a EMT then Just Beating a mans chest to get his heart to start beating again.

and IF you where walking like Jesus you would not get sick in the 1st place. not you not your children not your wife not your flocks or cattle.

Parents should be prohibited from making these decisions for their child. "Sweetie? Do you want to take the Devil's Penicillin or let Gawd heal you with his mystical healing powers?" I shudder to think how many children died because of this form of negligence.

I am a born again christian and it breaks my heart when people use their false doctrine to twist God's word. God created the doctors and medicines for a reason and for people to refuse to take their loved ones to the doctor need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. They will have to answer for God

I'm sorry, but that's simply survival of the fittest. It sucks to see children die, but whatever genes are causing such extreme gullibility are being weeded out of the gene pool.

It makes me very angry that some can be so ignorant!! They should be held accountable for their actions. Let's hope their Lord doesn't "Bless" them with another child to torture!!
