Question about .45 Long Colt guns?

Since the .45 Long Colt round can be filled with smokeless or black powder,do weapons chambered in it fall under the category of black powder or normal.Obviously you would have some problems if you put smokeless .45 rounds in an old SAA.SO what do they qualify as?Do you need to be 21 to buy .45 long cases?I'm pretty confused about this one.

Update:

I ask because It would be much easier to have a metallic cartridge gun for my first pistol than a muzzleloader, even if it is blackpowder.

Update 2:

I don't Massachusetts can be described as free in any sense of the word

If you buy a Ruger Vaquero, 45 LC, you are buying a modern gun, even if you load black powder in the cartridges you shoot out of it.

If you buy a 1st generation Colt "Peacemaker", in 45 LC, you are buying a gun designed to ONLY shoot black powder rounds. So, the old SA would be a "Curio & Relic".

The only modern guns that qualify under the blackpowder rules are muzzleloaders and those guns that do not use a metallic cartridge.

You must be 18 years of age to buy loaded ammunition.

There is no age limitation for reloading materials.

Just because a .45 Colt round can be loaded with either black or smokeless powder does not change a handgun's classification as an "antique" made before 1896, and what are classified as modern guns, made after that year.

    Assuming your in the US

All cartridge guns, unless they are true antiques made before 1898, are considered modern firearms and need to be purchased as such, even if they chamber a black powder cartridge. The "black powder" exemption is for muzzle loading firearms only. You need to be 21 to purchase any pistol cartridges. If your just purchasing cases that is a different matter. As long as you are in a free state there are no restriction on purchasing brass.

Additional Information: Since you mentioned your from Mass. You need a Firearms ID card to purchase any ammo or reloading components. Your one of only two states two restrict components.

It's the metallic cartridge that makes the difference not the kind of powder in the cartridge

the term Black Powder Gun has slowly become synonymous with muzzle loader or cap and ball

That is only partially correct on a superficial level

For the purposes of law, they are considered smokeless-powder cartridge firearms, because they can be loaded with smokeless powder cartridges. The fact that they can also be loaded with black powder does not change this.

Just a picky little point, there is no such thing as ".45 Long Colt." The name of the cartridge is ".45 Colt."

The word "long" snuck its way into use when the cartridge was new to differentiate it from an already-established cartridge, the .45 Schofield. Since .45 Colt cartridges were longer than .45 Schofield cartridges, they were called "long." This is a widespread colloquial use, and is incorrect.
