I'm not sure if it's still used this way, but it was used as lubrication for moving parts in car and airplane engines.

I know a lot of World War II fighters were lubricated with linseed oil.

Relative to your find, it was probably used as the base for paint. Many oil paints are based on linseed oil.

Linseed oil is also known as flax seed oil.

linseed oil is the "oil " in oil based paint.

It can also used alone as a preservative & weather proofing.

Still used as a base for artists colors "oil paints" for mixing pigments, thinning & extending drying time.

    As mentioned ....is expensive

A small bottle in an art supply store will cost a few bucks.

Not used very much anymore for it's original uses , but the smell takes me right back to being a kid.

    Best regards

Here in northern New Mexico, we dilute it with turpentine and use it to cure and protect new mud floors. It has several other uses such as someone pointed out, protecting wood a surfaces. It is not food grade and you should not use it for breadboards. It is also flammable and should be stored in a cool dry place. Oh, my carpenter friend says he uses it to protect ceiling "vigas". Beams that support the roof. Hope was a help. Kind regards!...........P.S - An artist friend says he uses it when mixing and applying oil base colors to masonite and canvas................

My grandmother use to make "Oil Skins" for my grandfather. She made the water proof clothes from cotton duck and then boiled it in lenseed oil to make it water proof.

    My Grandfather was a sailor.

Many years ago we used it at least yearly to treat wooden ladders. Would extend life of ladder for years and you would not get as many splinters when handling ladders...

You can use it to condition leather goods, (saddles, stuff like that)

It is actually fairly expensive, so don't throw it away, I think it lasts forever.
