cat problems?
Our house cat has decided to stop using his litter box to urinate. He is fixed and not marking his territory, but he refuses to urinate in the litter box. He will take a number two in the box but not an number one. What can we do to fix this? We have tried various types of litter and nothing is working and we really don't want rid of him either

If he was pooping outside the litter box then that is usually indicating a behavior problem, i.e. he is unhappy about something. Urinating outside the box 9 times out of 10 indicates that there is a medical issue that needs to be addressed. Take him to the vet immediately. Do not wait any longer. More than likely it can be cleared up quickly with some meds but if allowed to go on it will get far worse.

Is your litter box a covered one? Some cats will NOT "go" in a covered litterbox.
If that's not the case..........I think you could be looking at a urinary problem......bladder or urinary tract infection.
With a UTI, if the urine burns, while he's peeing in the box, he associates the discomfort with the BOX. So, he stops using it for THAT!
Take him to his vet, ASAP, to be checked for a UTI. If that's NOT the problem...great, then you have to figure out what IS the problem.
Hope it's something simple, that can be taken care of easily and quickly. Your cat will appreciate it......so will you!
Good luck..................

What you are describing is not a litter problem but kidney problem, UTI, which is an infection that is painful to them.
Please take him to the vet and the vet will prescribe antibiotics for him, he'll be right as rain in no time. Please don't wait too long, this gets far worse with terrible consequences of left too long.

Have you ruled out a UTI?
