Is the Home Secretary "fit for purpose," or should she be working for the News of the World?

None of them are fit for the purpose, none of them are trained for the purpose. The whole system is ludicrous, they can be Minister for this one day, and Minister for that another. Are they specialists in every field? They are simply mouthpieces, with a few exceptions, all it takes to become a politician is the gift of the gab and an ability to delude oneself. Oh, and some of the electorate.

Good question. I used to pride myself on being very informed and in the current about every issue. I've found that I've backed off quite a bit more and feel a more happy person because of it. New York Times Week in Review tells me what I need to know. I take a daily glance at headlines, maybe skim the article but find that nothing really changes when you get down to it. Also, due to the area I live in at this time I am unable to watch television and the pricing is outrageous for cable. However, I have a feeling if I was able to watch it then I'd at least hear what the major stories are. Other than that, it's paper and online

Bugaboo - Don't think Ms Harriet Harman is Home Secretary - think you will find it is Jacqui Smith. So stab proof vest was worn by the woman who answered PM's questions in the place of Brown - when William Hague asked his question in the place of Cameron.
Just to be fair though the stab proof vest was not worn for any protective quality but rather from a sartorial impulse to fit in with her three police escorts on the day she visited her constituency in Peckham - or so Harriet Harman says. First time three policeman have been seen in the Constituency for some time I hear.

From what i've seen of her so far she's a complete waste of time. However looking back on the previous home secretarys they have all had a rough ride. They get some real stick from the media. A difficult job but i guess that don't get paid too badly.

Are any of them? Their have been a series of people lately who have made a fist of this job. Why? It is because they are career polititians, and do not have the very specialised knowledge to carry out the task. The mandarins who are supposed to carry out the functions required know this, and have their own agenda (pensions, gongs etc). I have to wonder in this saga of the (largely) unaccountables - who is representing Joe Public here? And we want to ram our systems down the throat of Afghans...
