I didn't like the original Bubblegum Crisis, but love BGC 2040. The original felt kind of slapped together, and I didn't find the plot interesting. Plus, with the lighting techniques they used, it was frequently difficult to tell the good guys apart when they were in their power suits. Plus it is much shorter (8 40 minute episodes, as opposed to 2040's 26 25 minute episodes).

I've watched 2040 more often and more recently, so I'll talk on it.

The show is set in Tokyo in 2040. About 20 years previously, a great earthquake devastated the city, but there isn't much evidence of that anymore, as Voomers (they pronounce it as "Boomer"), robots with low-level sentience, were mass produced to rebuild the city. Now, for some reason, Voomers are occasionally going rogue and rampaging through the city, and a small band of women in high-tech armor called the Knight Sabers stop them while trying to figure out why they are going rogue in the first place.

The show is a blend of a lot of different aspects from a variety of genres. Obviously, the power suits and robots make it feel very sci-fi. But at the same time, they mostly fight at close-quarters against larger creatures, giving it aspects of fantasy shows like Record of Lodoss War or Slayers. And when you really analyze it, rogue voomers are really just mechanical versions of zombies.

Rally Vincent knows her weapons well, while her partner Minne May Hopkins loves to play with explosives. The pair run a gun-shop illegally and one day Bill Collins of the ATF, blackmails Rally and Minnie May into working for the ATF. Little do they know, that they are getting involved in a mission larger than they could imagine. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime...
