Is there a university in the US that does not require algebra for a Bachelor's Degree?

My wife can not and will not take college algebra. She has a real phobia about it. She wants a degree in art, psychology, or library science. Is there a state in the country or a university anywhere that does not require her to take algebra?

As a former math teacher, I sure hope not. However, to each his own. Have her check out Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. As they say, "All majors and academic pathways are student-designed." I'm not sure just what they mean by that, but if there's any decent school that will let her get by without even knowing high school algebra, that's the place. Tell her to wear her Birkenstocks and only eat organic.

You might look here, too, since Evergreen is on this list...

All universities require math. But some allow a student to avoid algebra by taking different math classes or at least double the sciences. Logic is a good substitute.

    Hey,

My brother was the only student in the history of his (and my) university who had to take algebra FOUR TIMES. But Jim made it. Three F's and one A. Because when Algebra clicks, it clicks.

And everyone admires my brother MORE for his perseverance with Algebra than if he had made an A at algebra the first time around.

Whatever is stopping your wife, it's not her fear of algebra.

If she has the basic knowledge most colleges will let you take a placement test. If you score adequately you place out of the class and don't have to take it. That is what I did. A bachelors degree shows a base level of education in multiple areas, she will have to take it if she does not have that level of education.

  • yes-if she goes for a BA instead of bachelor of Science-algebra is norrmally not required. I rec'd a BA in Psych-you do have to take statistics & a foreign language w/ a BA. For nursing, BSN, I had to take Algebra & statistics again, but no foreign language.
