Why do some Christians think speaking in tongues today is from satan?
Some have said that it has ceased and if there is any thing of the sort, it must be of the devil. But the devil is an imitator...a deceiver. So if some who speak in tongues are doing so from a satanic influence, wouldn't that mean that others are doing it under Divine inspiration? You have to have real currency out there for the counterfiet to be effective, correct?
And how would someone speaking in tongues from a satanic influence benefit the kingdom of darkness? How would that deceive people?
Any thoughts welcomed! Thanks!
Cee T,
Yeah, I suppose satan could deceive some people into thinking that because they spoke in tongues they're saved when they're not but I know many people who speak in tongues who have a real relationship with the Lord and have put their saving faith in the blood of Christ not in a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Drumbum,
It doesn't say it's not valid; it says it's not beneficial without an interpretation.

You are right in that it is a valid gift of the Spirit. We are told to test all spirits. The Scripture gives instruction for releasing and using the gift. It is also used a prayer language, as you indicated.
It can come from 3 sources:
1. The Holy Spirit.
2. Satan can counterfeit.
3. Emotion.
Sometimes you don't have words, the Spirit searches the depths of our hearts.
Usually, if it is Satan, you sense evil presence and the praises of God and the Word and authority will cause the counterfeit to flee.
People make too big a deal, they put God in a box. Let people be free as the Son has set them free. Where the Holy Spirit is, the enemy cannot remain, at least not for long. He loves to cause division over the gifts, the 5-fold ministry, and the Word.
We need to know the Word, stop quenching the Holy Spirit, and let God be God.
I personally believe the gifts are for today, I know they are. Evil will counterfeit whatever he can, so we know the genuine, and we discern.
I have learned over the years to let be God, test the spirits, and trust Him. He is much bigger than any of our blunders. It's call being free in Jesus.

This is a most hotly debated issue whenever it comes up, and I've heard just about every conceivable argument for and against it.
First off it is not a new phenomenon historically speaking.
Also it is not exclusive to Christianity; many other spiritualistic, esoteric groups exhibit the phenomenon particular various forms of African based spiritism which is still widely practiced today in places like Haiti.
Additionally it was one of the hallmarks of the charismatic movement in the late 60-70's when people from different denominations who otherwise would not worship together found unity around this phenomenon.
Moreover it is well established that the practice is highly addictive and also establishes some type of spiritual ranking amongst those who look favorably upon it. The United Pentecostal Churches for example believe that one cannot be saved unless one speaks in tongues—so to many it is a “salvation requirement.”
In fact there is still much dispute if the tongues that the apostles spoke were actual established languages of the time, for the purposes of communicating the message, or whether it was a non-language gibberish as is most commonly heard in Pentecostal circles today.
I know of at least several instances where recordings have been made and later analyzed and at least in one case in particular where the language uttered was indeed a form of Latin and the words themselves a sort of demonic casting of spells.
It is usually more common amongst the lower socioeconomic classes although not entirely so. Some say that it is a ‘heavenly language’ which seems to indicate it is somehow very similar to a type of mantra with similar effects upon practitioners.
I am very skeptical since most of the high profile religious celebrities scandals have involved folks who speak in tongues: Bakker, Swaggart, Bynum, White, on and on……

A couple of different reasons. One is that some churches hold to the erroneous teaching that there was an apostolic age when miracles happened and the gifts of the Holy Spirit were given to give the church a jump-start. They believe that once the Bible was compiled, there was no longer a need for these things because the church had teaching that met our needs for eternal life and our Christian walk. So therefore, the Holy Spirit no longer gives us gifts such as speaking in tongues, and those who do it are either faking, hysterical, or under the influence of a deceptive spirit. If it were a demonic power, it would be to deceive people into thinking that this was a valid gift and to get them to focus on that rather than the "truth".
Another reason is that speaking in tongues became common in pentecostal revivals which were often louder and more dramatic than many church people were used to. They equated speaking in tongues with uncontrolled, fanatic behavior, which leads the onlooker to think the person is just nuts, not praising God.
I believe in speaking in tongues and do myself, but have never gone to a church were there is open shouting or calling out. It is a prayer language, when there are no words to express something, or a prophetic language, which always must be followed by interpretation. <*)))><

First you need to know what the Bible means by speaking in tongues. When the disciples of Christ received the holy spirit on the first Pentecost after the crucifixion, they spoke in tongues. And the people standing near heard and UNDERSTOOD them in their own LANGUAGES:
Acts 2:8-11 -- And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."
Some deceived people today, believe that their babblings are needed to speak to God -- as if God doesn't perfectly understand French, English, German, etc.. Some believe that all believers receive the gift of speaking in tongues as proof of their having the spirit of God -- though the Apostle Paul said otherwise (1 Corinthians 12:30).
The Bible FACTS concerning speaking in tongues, are: it is earthly languages that are spoken, not meaningless babble; it is a gift given by God to spread the Good News, not some sort of proof of God's spirit; and not everyone is given this gift.
Those that speak in meaningless babble are indeed under the influence or deception of Satan. As you have said, Satan is a counterfeiter. His Church, his ministers, his "holy" doctrine, are all mockeries of God's truth; and that goes for speaking in tongues too. And just as his Church appears dominant, so too the false speakers in tongues are more prevalent than the true.
BTW, Satan cares not for any benefit to his Kingdom. Have you not read what Jesus said about Satan's kingdom? (Matthew 12:25-26)

Probably because satan has his copy of the gifts of the Holy Spirit also.
And people are scared to trust God enouph with their voice to receive it.
And some Churches teach it is of the devil also. People in cults have duplicated this. But when a possessed person speaks in tongues, then they don't remember after the fact.
One can easily discern if it is from God. Ask, "Is the person praising God?". When one receives this gift, the person is praising God or being obedient to God in some way & also has asked God for the gift. But to receive it, one needs to praise God with their voice first, & receive it when being prayed over or when in the congregation in praise & worship. And the Holy Spirit pours out the anointing.
Satan can't duplicate praising God. There will be a mocking tone or fear tone if it is demonic.

I grew up in a church where speaking in tongues happened every day. If you told those people it was from Satan, they'd probably stone you.
I don't know a lot about it, but I do believe that some people speak in tongues as a gift from the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in toungues comes from GOD NOT THE DEVIL. Idk why people think it is from the Devil. Speaking in tongues is God's gift to you for recieving the Holy Spirit. Some people do not believe in talking in tongues because they do not know the Holy Spirit.
To actually speak in tongues you have to...
Know Jesus Christ and accept Him as the Lord and Savior of your life and ask Him to forgive you of all your sins.
From there if you truly believe this, then the Holy Spirit will come apon you. Some people when they get the Holy Spirit they cry, talk in tongues, and sometimes pass out. It has different affects on different people. (:
I am assuming that you are a Christian too and that you already know this. But as for others some do not. That is why we Christians have to go and preach to the word of God.

I use to speak in tongues when in satanism, and it is countefit. satan will try to imitate everything that God does. You are right, it does not benefit satan in anyway, just his way of playing god. I now speak in tongues through the Holy Spirit. It is for today. I like to pray in tongues, because I know that the Holy Spirit is speaking the perfect will of God in that situation that I am praying about.

I do not think that speaking of tongues is of Satan. It is a legitimate spiritual gift but it should be kept out of regular worship service since we do not have anyone to interpret it. It is a language between God and the person. It interrupts the service and that should not happen at the worship.

I have known several people who think that because they spoke in tongues, they must be saved. That is how the devil deceives them. Their faith is in their "tongues speaking", not in the shed blood of Christ. I think some tongues speakers are saved and some are not. I myself was involved in Pentecostal churches for a while and did this so-called "speaking in tongues" thing. After a whie, I realized it is a form of self-hypnosis and was not of God.
