fluid in my knee... advice please!?
here's the long and short of it...
I have had constant fluid in my knee for some time now due to a fall. My ankle was severely sprained about 2 years ago, and while walking up a flight of stairs one day my ankle gave out, and I fell directly down on my knee... went to the doc, he said that I do have fluid, but not enough to worry about removing at that time. So, over time my knee swelling and fluid went down, and my ankle has healed slightly. I still had some fluid and discomfort in both my knee and ankle (both ankle and knee injuries to the same leg, they ache and are larger in size vs. my other leg).
So fast forward to a couple weeks ago… I was doing a little dancing at a friends house (not really out of the ordinary) and I woke up the next day and my knee is huge! Now, I was drinkin a tad… but not enough to not remember a fall / twist / pop or anything. So I iced & elevated it hoping the swelling would decrease, and it did, slightly.
I decided to visit the doctors to see if he would drain the fluid now and he did – 12cc’s of fluid in all. He also injected steroids to help combat the fluid from accumulating again. This was about a week ago and the swelling has obviously gone down a bit, but the pain lingers and so does this feeling that it is going to give out at any time. I also feel a burning sensation when I am on it too long.
Well the doc didn’t really inform me as to what kind of recovery time and method I should take, so I guess my questions are…
- What is the recovery time for something like this?
(as I would love to start walking for my exercise program, but I feel it would be detrimental at this point)
- What things should I be doing to care for the injury?
- What steps can I take to prevent this in the future while still being active?
- Should I see a specialist about my knee to ensure I am caring for it properly and there isn’t a serious injury?
I know this is long, so many thanks in advance for any advise or guidance!!!

ok... if the swelling continues or causes u to limp when u walk then yes u should go and see a specialist and maybe even get an MRI just to be on the safe side but since u said that u had a feeling that ur knee wants to give out then i would make an appointment to get ur knee looked at sooner rather then later cause u may have a torn ligament or even a torn meniscus....
until u can get an MRI done stay off ur knee as much as possible and continue to ice and elevate...
