Are these harry potter characters related?...?

Because we learn so little about Harry's family, past his parents, it is really hard to say, although there is a possibility....

- They are definitely not related on Lilys side as she is muggle born

- We know James is from a pure blood family.

- When Harry discovers the Black family tree (and yes, according to Sirius he is related to Malfoy and the Wesleys, as distant cousins so, Rose and Scorpius are yet more distantly related) he is shocked to discover some of the people Black is related to...a nd Black tells him ... )Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, US Hardcover pg 113 Chapter: The Noble and Moste Ancient House of Black) "The pureblood families are all interrelated," said Sirius. Almost certainly they *are* related. Remember, ancestry(without incest) progresses geometrically. Thus, you have 4 grandparents, 16 great-grandparents, 32 great-great-grandparents, etc. It wouldn't be hard for (marginally) inbred populations such as pureblood wizards to be related at, as you mention, the 5th "degree" (first cousins are related through descent from grandparents, second cousins through great-grandparents, etc.) Consider that a fifth-degree ancestry includes 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 + 64 ancestors (= 126)! It wouldn't be a huge surprise if one of those 126 people - or even just one of the 64 GGGG-grandparents - was also an ancestor of Ginny. Much closer relationships are common in many "secluded" societies - whether that seclusion is geographical, religious or otherwise cultural. Albert Einstein married his own first cousin - and that only about 100 years ago. Marriages not legally incest but still relatively close in degree are still quite common around the world.

but the weasley and the malfoys are

rose and scorpius are related by Cygnus Black and Druella Rosier, Alphard Black, and Walburga Black etc they are only related by a lot of great grandmothers and fathers

I dont think they are related, but perhaps family trees mingle or something. I know they end up having kids together, and there is no mention of any retardation or other deformities, so they couldnt be too closely related
