feeding your dog?

why are so many of you disagree with home cooking for a dog, as I love cooking for my two - breakie , lunch and dinner etc and giving such drinks etc as no tea, coffee, cordial , oj even if it is a well balanced diet etc...

I understand like huge amounts of chocolate etc it is bad for us too tho why do so many of us follow such trends

Because they have bought into the whole mass marketing thing and its nice and easy to just scoop a cup of biscuits into a bowl, without any real thought for their dogs nutrition at all, even if it is being provided by the same companys that make our foods such as Mars (pedigree, chappie, Waltham) bars and Magic Stars (Nestle Purina)- they dont make good nutrition for us yet they believe they care so much for our pets?!?! They SELL it, people seem to foget that.

Its perfectly good, in fact better nutrition to feed your dog a home cooked diet, and or give raw meat and bones along with it. A million times better than a diet purley made of over processed mush that is dried out and the vitamins have to be sprayed back in - yuk.

Every mineral a dog needs is available in a raw bone, dogs also make vitamins that our bodies cant so dont even need suplements is healthy, a fresh diet helps them to do this and its much easier on their tummies too.

Why would all those companies be printing 'made with fresh meat' on the front, if the fresh meat is so bad for them, or calling a food 'chicken and rice' if the (people food) chicken and rice is so bad for them.

how can people think that so called 'peope food' is so bad for them when the first thing people do when their dog gets diahrea is feed scrambled egg/toast/rice/chicken etc

I can understand that some people just want to feed for convenience but I can't understand the mentality that 'people food' is so bad for them.

I dont give anything but water to mine to drink

Source(s): Pet owner, have fed MANY convenience/processed diets to pets and dont think they are as good as feeding a raw meat and bones diet or a homecooked diet, or even a combination af raw with homecooked is far better than pet food. If its good enough for me to eat, its good enough for my dog, cant say the same about pet food! Here are some links, most written by vets that are 'awake' to the pet food industry. http://www.seefido.com/html/dog_food_recipes.htm http://www.petskitchen.co.uk/joe-and-jacks/dog-rec... http://holisticvet.co.uk/nutrition.htm http://www.holisticpethealth.co.uk/homecooking.htm http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html www.rawmeatybones.com I can provide more links on raw food diet if you want?

People food is not bad for dogs if it is healthy people food. The problem is if you cook the food you have to balance it well for a proper diet. I am working on switching to mainly raw for my puppy and still debating on my older dog who has a lot of problems I will switch but I am thinking no bones and a calcium supplement.

Anyway if tea and coffee are not good for humans except some herbal teas neither is sugar but what some people don't realize is that dog food they buy is loaded with sugar.

If you research and learn to do it right a home cooked diet could be a great improvement over dog food whatever method you choose even kibble or canned dog food you need to research the ingredients.

I think many people disagree because they assume if you're cooking for your dog, you're just cooking a little bit extra from what you're eating, not realizing that responsible people who cook for their dog aren't just cutting off an extra piece of that fried chicken and adding it to the KFC coleslaw and pouring gravy all over it.

I know many people (given they live alone and are retired) that enjoy cooking meals for their dog. They prefer these to bagged dog food because they know they're getting the proper nutrients. Many people don't realize that cheap bag they pick up at walmart is like feeding your kids mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs. Sure, it probably tastes just fine but it doesn't have the right amount of nutrients or the right way to get them.

There are cookbooks out there for those interested in cooking for their pets that explains what to feed your dog, how much etc. I personally do not have a problem with people who want to go the extra mile to feed their dog real food (and "human" food includes food that other animals in th wild eat). I can't see myself cooking for my dog anytime soon only because I barely have enough time anymore to throw a meal together for myself, so I have absolutely no problem buying a little pricier, quality dog food.

I've included just one site I found that has a home cooked dog food diet, along with why and what your dogs should be eating: http://www.drbasko.com/nutrition.htm

For the same simple reason that you would get ill if you only ate dog food - a human diet just doesn't contain what a dog needs. Dogs have different nutritional needs from us i.e. they need much more protein, and if you are feeding your dog the same diet as yourself then it's likely to be very lacking in what s/he needs. Not to mention with unsuitable additives i.e. salt that can give a dog kidney failure. Any cooked food, even just plain meat, is not good for dogs as their digestive systems can't cope with it - they eat everything raw in the wild so why on earth would you think they need it cooked?

Would you give a newborn baby a full roast dinner? No, because it's not suitable and milk is better for them - the same with animals and human food.

Your dog may like your food but s/he will get ill despite your best intentions - and huge vets bills later, you might be regretting your decision. If you really don't want to feed him/her 'normal' dog food then how about a BARF diet which is the best possible for them? It's raw meat etc, as they would eat in the wild.

Oh, and chocolate is poisonous to dogs and the smallest amount can give them heart failure so don't give him/her any, never mind 'huge amounts'!!

If you look at what wild canines eat, you would understand why you cooking for your dogs will not give them good nutrition. When a wild canine kills and eats, nothing is wasted. They eat the guts, the stomach, all of the organs, the bones, the brains. There are trace minerals and elements that we brainiac humans remove from the food that we eat. If you supplement your dogs very well, go online to find a really good vitamin and mineral mix for them, then you'll be okay.

But it really is easier to buy a bag of good quality kibble.

My Weim has a VERY sensitive stomach and when we first got him, the vet told us to give him boiled ground beef and plain cooked rice.

Once his stomach settled, I asked the vet if we should use a home cooked meal diet for him and the vet was adamant against it. He told me that we could never replace all of the nourishment that dog food has...

We use a special food for him now, as it seems the best for his belly. I hope he grows out of it after puppyhood....

Because people food is bad for dogs, it lacks the needed nutrient, plus soft foods are a nightmare with canine teeth! Dry keeble keeps plaque off their teeth but home made meals won't are you also brushing them after each meal? Because if youa re not chances are soon you will have a very expensive vet dental bill!
