How's this for a can of worms??
OK, first a disclaimer: I'm not advocating either, but it has occurred to me that the extremely conservative polygamist cult and the gay rights folks would both benefit from a redefinition of marriage. So, to all those who have no problem with opening the can of worms for same-sex marriages, will you be just as tolerant of the bunch from El Dorado & others like them??? I mean, once you change the rules, shouldn't you be willing to be all tolerant and change them for everybody???

Yep, you did open a can of worms didn`t you?!
Guess I`m 'old-fashioned', but American laws & government were set up when people still had morals, values, belief in God. Then the laws & government started changing 'things'. Now anyone can do just about anything & if you draw attention to it you`re being predjudice, infringing on others rights. Pretty amazing how an 'educated' society has turned everything into a chaotic free-for-all.

When marriage is viewed legally, (as in the government's place in it, therefor their ability to define it at all) marriage is a contract between individuals for shared property, assets, and parental rights. So yes, when you think of it that way, how does the government justify restriction to only male+female contracts? How do they justify restricting it to only two parties?
Anything outside of one man +one woman might not be recognized by the church as a valid marriage, but we're talking about the government here, not the church.
Polygamy is certainly not socially acceptable in westernized countries, and not condoned by most religious groups, but when the government is concerned... Well, maybe that can should have been opened a long time ago.

The worlds philosophy is tolerate do not condemned!
Why does the world teach us, that we must tolerate everybody's wrong doing? Did Jesus tolerate sin no! Did any of the apostles, tolerate wrong doing? They confronted the problem and told them to repent. Why are Christians so naive today? Are you really reading the word of God? They are fallowing New Age beliefs. Do you really believe that if all the Apostles were preaching this love and not condemned sin, that anybody would have killed them! We the Christians; are to be hated; by the world, and if everybody loves you guess who is not there. Jesus said if they hated Me they will also hate you. He also said in the Gospel of John the world hates Me because I keep telling them that their ways are evil. (John 7:7.) Can you tell me-- about this word tolerance? I hate it. Sure Jesus had tolerance for the sinner, but never for the sin. Can you see the where this is leading. Where is the fear of the Lord, and how is, one to repent, if all is justified by the world’s tolerance. Christians we need another John the Baptist today. The whole body of Christ is being deceived by the New Age. Why does the world keep telling us to be tolerant? And were does justice take place. Today’s thinking brains! Today we have the smartest technology but we forgot our morals, and now we stand at the brink of disaster waiting to happen. We need to obey the laws Yeshua--Jesus has given us in His Holy Word the Bible and we must obey it. I love all kinds of freedom, except the freedom to do what is wrong in God's eyes. So yes I respect all religions. Except the one that justifies wrong behavior like raping murder and so on. We as Christians need to be the light, because The New age is telling us if you kill it's because it is in your genes, they are always justifying; wrong instead of dealing with the problem. We cannot keep on blaming our parents for all the wrongs we do, and we must take full Responsibility for our actions when we hurt another human being. We must also be able to tell the people God said this is the way, you must walk. When people go against God's laws they hurt themselves, others and God. For the just must live by faith but if he turns back I will have no pleasure in him says the Lord. Anna

My guess is that were the rules altered in the way you suggest, there would be hardly any takers. There have been many woman that I have found attractive. But i have only truly loved the one, and no amount of rule changing will alter that for me. But I have no objections to a free for all for everyone else, except my wife and children, and grandchildren

We should all have one rule - the old rule. Man and woman. One of each. Keep things simple - and moral.

Ah yes, the "slippery slope". Soon we'll be marrying fish. Give it up.
