Replaced thermocouple on water heater and now feral/nut under pilot light is leaking. What do I do?

The pilot line seems to wiggle a little and when I try to tighten the nut, it doesn't seem to do any good. I've been to a few hardware stores and no one seems to have the part I need to replace it; or they're just not understanding what I mean. It would be costly to have a plumber come to my residence to fix something that is so trivial. My husband is out of town and we plan on replacing the tank but for now I just need hot water for a couple of weeks till he gets back.

Option 1: Go ahead and call for some quotes and have the whole thing replaced. If that's something you planned to do anyway, why not do it a few weeks early. It will be expensive but it is strenuous tricky job and your husband will thank you for taking care of it.

Option 2: Check that there is a bead around the outside of the under the nut at each end of the pilot light feed tube. The bead is squeezed when the nut is tightened and it holds the tube in place and keeps it from leaking. It is possible that the bead fell off during repair.

it sounds like you "stripped" the compression nut. someone will need to properly cut the tubing and replace the nut and ferrule.

be sure to test for gas leaking before you light up the water heater.
