What gets out the smell of a skunk?
have a Golden Retriever that was sprayed by a skunk 2 weeks ago? (She literally had the thing in her mouth when it sprayed her. Both skunk and dog are fine lol) However, she still smells! It isn't as bad as it was once she first get sprayed but it is still evident.
We have tried everything from tomato juice to baking soda to bathing her with every type of dog shampoo (even ones that say they take out the skunk spray...liars!) My mother has even resorted to spraying her with Febreze on a daily basis. Is there anything else out there that we could have missed?
One more thing, this is the second time she has gotten sprayed. The first time we took her to Pet Smart and got her groomed and they used a "deskunker" on her. I felt it didn;t really help...plus she got a rash from it. So that also probably won't work.

After working at a vet hospital where we got skunked dogs at least every couple weeks, I have to say it's just a difficult process. Keep giving her baths every couple of days with the anti-skunk dog shampoo, and you might want to add some distilled white vinegar as well, which can help a lot. Skunk scent is an oil-based molecule, and is meant to stick around. Certain shampoos like Selsun Blue help strip away some of the smell but not all. I would go with the vinegar and lemon juice as well. These are acidic and can also help cut away at the spray. You may end up having a dog that smells slightly of salad, but it's better than skunk, neh?
Good luck love!

I have had a few dogs that got sprayed by a skunk. Here is what we did:
1/2 cup baking soda
1 liter of hydrogen peroxide
2 tablespoons of dawn.
Let this sit for a good 10 minutes while you are rubbing it into the fur of the dog. Hose off, repeat if necessary, and bath with a regular smelly (as in smells good) dog shampoo.
You may also want to try getting some dog Cologne spray.
If worse come to worse, shave the dog down, which will get rid of most of the fur that was actually sprayed by the skunk.

Tomato juice works well but you will probably have to use tomato juice 2-3 times (leave it on him/her for 5 minutes) before the smell is completely gone. After the skunk smell is gone; Use dog shampoo so she doesn't keep smelling like a big tomato.

The key is to get rid of the "oil" that the skunk spray is made of- tomato juice and baking soda don't do that. I would recommend following this recipe:
http://www.ehow.com/tips_3017.html
You have to be very careful about getting it in her eyes, as the peroxide will hurt her eyes. This is the only recipe I've heard that works- and you've got to get it on the spot where she was sprayed.
Good luck!

Once you've tried the tomato juice and baking soda bath, well that should neutralize the odor some. After that, you could try bathing with a FERRET shampoo.
They have some nice coconut smelling ferret shampoos that cover odor that ferrets, even the "de-scented" ones, carry.

I know some pet stores carry shampoo especially for skunk sprays. Maybe check out your local PetSmart or PetCo.
Ooopss....Sorry I didn't read the entire question...you already tried that!
I always heard Tomato juice works....*shrugs*

Unfortunately time heals all wounds and stench is true LOL seriously though my rhodesian ridgeback and shar-pei played tug of war with Mr. stinky last year. We used listerine and scope on them with a mixture of toothpaste. Wasn't great but they were a little better. However it doesn't last.... And for everytime they get wet for the next six months there will be that hit of Skunk. SORRY

leave the animal in the tomato juice for 10 minutes if that dont work try one bottle of vinagar and a table spoon of bleach

tomato juice, beer but the most effective would be a liquid dish washer and some liquids that you use to clean a bathroom..

i know it probably sounds crazy, but call your GP. there is a soap they use to take the smell off people who get sprayed. I suggest that to prevent it from happening again, you keep your dog leashed!!!!!
