Westboro Baptist Church - An "atheist cabal"?

Christians and atheists alike, what do you think of a newspaper that prints an editorial about the Westboro Baptist Church, and includes this phrase -

"They can't be real Christians. They must be part of an atheist cabal."

http://www.redding.com/news/2008/apr/11/funeral-pi...

Update:

Coincidentally, this newspaper is based in the city where the last church I attended had it's "parent" church.

They have this huge "school" that you go to in order to learn how to be a prophet and speak in tongues and such.

Maybe it's not such a coincidence, then, to hear such an opinion from the newspaper of such a town.

Update 2:

Weiss, is this the incident you're talking about? If so, wherever you got your information is mistaken.

If not, please cite your source.

I thought the phrase "athiest cabal" was hilarious until I actually read the article. I love how the author can manage to blame the atheists for something that has absolutely nothing to do with us. I can't believe the newspaper printed that crap.

This is akin to saying that the Tea Party is a bunch of liberal activists trying to make ultra-right wingers seem really extreme, thereby forcing moderates back to the left. WBC is really a group of atheists, therefore potential faithies will be thrown the other way. In both cases, the answer is 'no', based on Occam's Razor. It is OKAY to accept there are genuine lunatics in the world without having to turn to a similar form of lunacy to explain them.

Sounds like that paper is either biased or outright owned by the Westboro "church" or its parent church.

Oh yes, I see sooo many atheists going around picketing funerals of dead soldiers, preaching against gays, and quoting the Bible. *rolls eyes*

The Westboro whackjobs aren't real Christians since they don't preach what Christ taught, but they're not atheists, either. If they were, they wouldn't be quoting the Bible and using religious rhetoric to promote their disgusting hatred.

I think real atheists have better things to do than go to church on Sunday, picket funerals, and say all the soldiers are going to die because there are gay people in the U.S.

I don't know, atheist people just seem more intelligent than that.

Apparently the author of that editorial has never ever seen any example of radical Christianity in history. (I guess he/she was absent the day the Inquisition and Crusades were taught) He/she is ignorant. Also, as someone who lives in Kansas, we do not want nor do we claim those morons. They're just sick people who are using religion to hide behind as they attempt to further their agenda of hate.

I think the newspaper is part of the "blame atheism first" crowd. They're the same type of people who blame Marilyn Manson because some kid shoots his classmates.

Yes, oh, it makes perfect sense, people that believe explicitly that everything wrong with the world is gods punishment for homosexuality in America.

    Totally, they are definately atheist.

The westboro baptist church is a cult, like the LDS and the JW's . They do not serve the Jesus I serve.

All I know is that I've never, ever met an Atheist who is that sick and disgusting. I wouldn't insult all my wonderful Atheist friends by comparing them to Fred Phelps or his followers. God bless.

  • It's just another way to insult Atheists.

God owns that one. They are christian ~ maybe not the best example of christianity and maybe not "true" christians to some, but christian just the same.
